What Parents Say
Long Island City YMCA receives mostly positive reviews praising friendly staff, clean facilities, and quality amenities like swimming classes and an indoor pool. However, some members report concerns about maintenance issues, lack of supervision in certain areas, and uncomfortable conditions.
I have been a member of this gym for a while and I said no more! There is no supervision of children in the weight and machine area, as well as no supervision of older people using these machines. The air conditioning is horrible, you never feel it, it is so uncomfortable to exercise in the heat. The bathrooms look old and dirty. There are machines that have been damaged for a long time and they do not fix them. To clean your machine, the times are that you do not get the paper to clean. Pay $80 for a membership to this gym, for much less you can get something better. It is a disappointment to be a member of this gym and see how decadent and little attention is paid to the infrastructure.
Get a free pass before becoming a member. They be turning off the air conditioner from Cardio room & bathrooms in the summer. Only in the first floor entrance is cold, don’t be fool. When it was a heat wave, they have the thermostat at 79(shown in photo taken) which it won’t turn on. It’s disgusting the smell of sweat. Shower heads in the second floor don’t work properly. When school starts, YMCA shares the gym with 3 to 4 High schools and it’s crowded, especially on Tuesdays. They added new machines in the Cardio room. They also increase membership. We, as members complain about the temperature and they tell us to talk to Sabrina or email her.
Came in to pause my membership on Sunday 11/30 around 12:30 pm. There was only one gentleman in the front desk, and he clearly seemed annoyed. I tried to be very nice asking him how he was and his attitude was very like “just get to the point”, which can make any person uncomfortable or thrown off. Usually when there’s a bad interaction between a staff member and a customer, there’s more to the backstory and more likely both parties are at fault, but this guy just seemed annoyed at everyone and everything. His attitude was not only towards me, but everyone coming in the front desk. There were two other persons, young adults, that walked in around that same time frame 12:30-12:50 that seemed like it was their first time coming in so they didn’t really know where to scan or what to do in order to access the facility. He was like “just scan” and didn’t even bother to show them where to scan nor to help one of them out, which was clearly having trouble scanning the barcode. It’s one thing to have that attitude that usually younger adults working there have, than the “you are annoying me” attitude towards customers. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name. YMCA is a really good place, especially LIC branch, and all of their staff is very helpful and nice. But interactions like this can really make a negative impact on existing members and future/new ones.
I used to come here to swim and there was a life guard who was very creepy. He would only look at me when I was swimming in the lanes and not all the other swimmers but obviously it's his job so I didn't think much of it. But then one time i went to the gym and i was on the treadmill. I put on my glasses and look up to see him across diagonally in front of me in the treadmills against the walls. He was just standing there smiling and looking at me through the mirror. Then he gets off and starts walking towards me. I got scared, so I ran away. He was hispanic and had a mustache or something. Only the men life lifeguards acted weirdly in front of me, never the females. I just wanted to swim in peace w/o being objectified. And the weird ones were also a tall white guy, and an asian guy who is around the same height as the hispanic life guard but maybe short. I'm pretty sure they are all a lot older than I was when I was in this ymca and I was only 18 at the time. Idk if he still works there nor his name. If he and the other life guards see this, get a life. Weridos and creeps everywhere and its always a man. That was just one example. Its also not worth paying so much money for a tiny gym facility where people hog the machines and don't clean after themselves.
The LIC YMCA is amazing. Their staff is very friendly and kind. They truly made my daughter's birthday a memorable one. They offer swimming classes, my daughter loves how interactive and fun they are. Shes been taking classes for 3 years now. Being a member at the Y has it's perks for discount on classes! The pool staff and aquatics director are extremely, helpful, friendly and informative. They made my daughter's pool party a memorable one.
