Many families report long-term enrollment and deep satisfaction with the instruction and mentorship provided.
I think Carey Leeds is a great place to play tennis and the adult program is set up nicely. However the director Asha has attitude and does not look at levels of players fairly. Also the pros should at least pretend to be enthusiastic
I really regret signing up my child for this program. It feels like there are two types of students here — the ones who are already familiar to the staff, and the rest of us. For the “familiar” kids, everything seems great — small group sizes, friendly greetings, real coaching attention, and even the parents are treated warmly. But for new students like us, it’s completely different. The staff barely greet us, and the kids are often yelled at loudly for not understanding instructions. The group sizes are chaotic, especially for younger children, and the coaching feels unprofessional. After a full month, my child was still stuck on the very basic moves, with no real guidance or encouragement. The coach often looked frustrated and unmotivated. This program gives good resources and care only to people they already know. If you’re new, you and your child may just be ignored or left behind. I honestly feel it’s a waste of time. Please think carefully before sending your child here.
The tennis program is good in some places but in some places the support coaches asking a deal to clean up putting away their stuff before they can practice extra time . They should also help too not just sitting and chatting. This happen in Juniper park hope.
Total waste of time. This program is NOT open to all abilities. Coach Joyce did a FANTASTIC JOB discouraging a prospective player & parent from returning to THIS program. My son is on the spectrum and that was the first thing I communicated to Coach Joyce. After I told her that, she told me the best time for me to bring him would be 4 pm instead of 3 pm (which was the time we showed up>3pm). Then she later changed the time again back down to 3 pm because she said she “wasn’t aware he was on the spectrum.” That’s the first thing I told her.‼️ But since we were there she would take him. She wanted to just have my son in the court with the other kids while I was suppose to wait outside. THAT was the First 🚩 I explained to Coach Joyce that with this new change new people etc my son needed his support system which was me so I would be going in the court with him. Coach Joyce had the children do some warmup exercises and games. Coach Joyce kept trying to 🚩drill my son to perform everything exactly to the “T” which: 1. Caused attention to be focused on him from the other children (now he’s self-conscious and feeling a bit embarrassed)‼️ 2. Kept having him repeat the drills until he did it correctly (he was slowly starting to shut down)‼️ After I explained to her again that being on the spectrum my son was working his way through this new change and he needed to be given that time to adjust in his way even if that meant he was 2 inches away from where SHE wanted him to actually stand. But Coach Joyce insisted that he had to “march” the same way like the other kids because that’s how it’s supposed to be. Because of that my son totally shut down and didn’t want to participate anymore. 💔 Coach Joyce said I was making excuses for him >>>THE AUDACITY!‼️ Coach Joyce said she’s worked with countless kids on the spectrum. I told Coach Joyce this is YOUR FIRST TIME working with MY CHILD so I’m explaining to you how HE is! Coach Joyce wasn’t trying to listen. I don’t know if it was because she had gotten her two teeth pulled or what (maybe we weren’t light enough 🤷🏻♀️) But her whole attitude towards my son was very rigid.‼️ I communicated to Coach Joyce that I have never seen this kind of behavior from a coach when I’ve had my child in other sports programs with neurotypical children. All those coaches have been very flexible to allow my son to adjust in HIS OWN WAY. Coach Joyce then proceeded to say she was doing me a favor by offering him a one on one session the next time he came which basically was excluding him from the rest of the group. No inclusion at this site: Roosevelt Island. And if she was anything like that first day NO THANK YOU! 🎉🎉🎉Congratulations🎉🎉🎉 Coach Joyce if your mission was to discourage us from attending the program again YOU SUCCEEDED!
This program is excellent; some reviewers need to read their mission statement. NYJTL is not a tennis academy or day camp; it is an open-enrollment opportunity for all children in New York to learn to play tennis -- for free. That means you will interact with all types of coaches at all skill levels, all sorts of children, and, unfortunately, all kinds of parents. What I like about the senior coaches is that they try to maintain some basic level of discipline, which can be hard when dealing with dozens of kids and parents coaching from the sidelines and others that treat them as babysitters who they can tell what to do. Furthermore, if you want your child to improve their skills, take a few minutes to reinforce the skills the coaches teach them at home. Any coach, or teacher for that matter, always invests a little extra in those students who are really trying to listen and learn. And, once again, this program is FREE. Thank you, NYJTL. Now you little brat: ready position...unit turn...racquet back...follow through!
