What Parents Say
Parents consistently praise the YMCA Southeast Branch's friendly and caring staff, cleanliness, and overall quality childcare experience. Most reviewers rate the facility highly and appreciate the peace of mind it provides. However, some concerns were raised about overcrowding, facility transitions, and billing practices.
Overall great location. Can be overcrowded sometimes. Overall staff is reasonably friendly. Some equipment is on the older side but things generally seem to be in good working condition. Very cozy/homey/manageable facility. Very walkable/bikeable. The facility is changing locations in 2019. I am concerned about the lack of good plans for walkability/bikeability to the new location on Clover.
I love the Southeast YMCA, including it's size and the lovely staff. We've been members since the early 90s, and it has everything we need. I do have a concern, though, that the new mega-complex will be less convenient and some of Southeast's neighborhood charm will be lost. While I understand the perceived need to expand SE's space, pools, and services, the overwhelming size of the new Y feels corporatized, more like a fitness mall than a part of the neighborhood. I'm sure I'll adjust, but if I wanted a huge Y, I could go to Penfield's Eastside site.
The facilities are decent, though there are more kid-friendly pools at other nearby places (JCC, perinton aquatic center); the water at all the places I've tried thus far (YMCA, perinton) is cold enough that I have a "bodysuit" type warmer-wrap for my 1 year old otherwise he starts shivering and turning blue after 10-15 min in the water - in Texas there was a child swim facility with a pool and area that was body temp and wonderful for babies as young as 6 weeks but I've not found that in Rochester. The YMCA instructors we had for swim classes for my 3 year old in 2016 were great. However, one thing to be careful of; YMCA will sign you up for auto-payments that will not expire or stop, nor will they give you any kind of receipt or notice, even for years. I had thought I canceled my membership over a year ago and just recently realized there was a recurring $30 charge from the YMCA - over a year later - with zero notifications even though the YMCA was sending me emails about plenty of other stuff. This kind of stealth billing I expect from predatory gyms but I hadn't expected of the YMCA. They were "kind enough" to refund 3 months (of a year) of unintended payments. Yes I am still annoyed, even if I should have combed my bills more vigilantly. Yes it was probably in the paperwork I signed over a year ago, but it was not in any of the emailed confirmation receipts I received. Thus far the JCC says my trial membership will just expire after 3 months, not automatically enroll me for other things and start billing. Perinton aquatic center I was able to buy a card-style pass that doesn't expire and I just use as needed. I would recommend either of these places right now over the YMCA (and there are other centers out there as well these are just the ones I know of)
Friendly staff and people. I would give five stars if it wasn't for the behavior and number of the children in summer camps as well as during the summer camps the men's and womens locker rooms get filled with children when the counselors should be using the family locker room for the children instead.
Friendly and helpful staff. Lots of people use this Y which helps to explain the size of the new Schottland Family YMCA
