What Parents Say
Sojourner Center is a domestic violence support organization that receives strong praise for its mission and donation programs, but faces serious criticism regarding denial of rental assistance and shelter services to qualifying survivors. Multiple reviewers report that eligibility policies are applied rigidly without consideration of emergency circumstances, and allege inadequate case management and security concerns at the shelter.
Honest Review: I went through their outreach program and applied for rent assistance after losing my son and covering funeral costs. As a domestic violence survivor, this denial was especially devastating, as I was relying on their support to maintain housing and stability during an extremely difficult time. I was shocked when they denied me, saying my budget didn’t qualify — even though I had been successfully maintaining all my bills prior to my son’s death. The funeral costs are what got me behind, and this was not taken into consideration; instead, I was penalized for their budget rule, which is a silly and unfair policy. If everyone’s budget had to be perfect to qualify, then what’s the point of providing rental assistance at all? Most people’s budgets will be impacted during a crisis especially survivors of domestic violence and this rule punishes the people who need help the most. Luckily, I got help at the last minute from a church that has nothing to do with DV survivors, and that in itself is a shame. The issue wasn’t lack of funding they clearly just did not care. My extreme circumstances, extraordinary crisis, and grief were absolutely not considered, or they would have helped. I am writing this review because, as a grieving parent, you don’t expect this type of treatment. I don’t mind participating in other programs they offer, I realize they get funding and donations based on client participation but the reality is if the organization is getting donations and funding based on this they need to fix this loophole it’s a form of cherry picking and that just isn’t right the policy is ridiculous and needs to be changed immediately .The whole point of being part of the program is to receive guidance and support and financial help if it’s available which it was. I hope this review helps others get better service and that they change their policies in the future, because this loophole is unfortunate and only hurts domestic violence survivors instead of helping them this in the future could cause many DV survivors to stay with there abusers or go back to there abusers for fear they won’t get the help they need to maintain safety and stability as you know the most dominant form of domestic violence after the physical abuse is financial abuse and sometimes a combination of both not every Dv Victim wants to be evicted and stay in a DV shelter or Transitional housing which this organization also gets funding for especially if the victim can avoid it I’m glad I’m not in that situation but what happens when someone is or maybe someone has been and just didn’t post a review. Do better Sourjourner. *Side note there lay legal program is great I highly recommend that’s the only positive thing I can say about this organization. Sincerely ,A Victim Of Domestic Violence
I’m lost for words on how someone can be denied at a domestic violence shelter. My sister was literally beating up to the point she could see out of her eye a numerous other situations and yet she’s still being denied into the shelter that has an opening for her and her kids. The man has an active felony arrest warrant out and she’s still not considered to qualify for the services. I feel bad she try’s to get away from the situation and she ends up going back because she has no where to flee too. I’ve heard numerous bad things about this shelter and I’m starting to witness it what it is. You would think they would help anyone actively fleeing from domestic violence but I guess they get to pick and choose.
This place does nothing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help families that are fleeing domestic violence. There's NO compassion. I'm led to believe this place is using the funding to their own benefit. There's NEVER funding to help with housing. Nor are they providing (ASKED FOR) resources. The Shelter director handles participants very aggressively and Rude. My entire time here has been a nightmare. They are receiving funding to help women in situations like me and the only thing we have received is a place to sleep. I have lost everything being here. Today is my exit date and for the past week my case management here has been giving me FALSE INFORMATION and false hope. The security gate has been down for over a week and I've expressed my unanswered concerns to numerous people numerous times. My location and other participants has been exposed for this entire time. I've been doing everything possible to change my situation and regain my power and control over my life since leaving my abuser. Yesterday my car was towed away by repo . I had been paying small payments to keep my car as it's the last bit of security my family has. With my exit date approaching I had to chose to either pay my car note or apply for apartments so that my kids and I would not end up how we are today. I assumed I would have time to catch up with my car once I'm approved for a place because this shelter is supposed to have a secured gate for residents. I pray that this review reaches as many donors as possible. The donations are not being used to better the DV survivors. This place should be shut down immediately. And before it's asked YES I KEPT MY CASE MANAGERS UP TO DATE WITH MY EVERY MOVE. There's a list of other complaints I could continue to expose about this shelter. I held back in fear of being put out but now that I still have to leave having received NO assistance with anything I'm going to get my story to reach as many people as possible
Sojourner saved my life and helped me and my children past (several years ago) and I am forever thankful to JESUS and Sojourner for helping me be safe. 💖🌸 EXCELLENT place to donate to as it really does help women and children greatly.
I always feel like our donation is truly appreciated by the staff at Sojourner Center. We drive a little farther but, so tired of "attitude" when I USED TO drop-off at Goodwill or Salvation Army.
