North Norwood Special Ctr Lear

NOTE: The "correct" history on this facility is that it was built as a Grade School. I attended there from kindergarten through fifth grade until we then moved to the suburbs. My parents owned a home across the street (approx years 1961-1967). It was the most wholesome of times growing up. One of our neighbors was the school secretary, her husband was a City Councilman. Another neighbor was the head janitor. When you look at the big asphalt playground, invision the annual Fall Festival, with lots rides and games. I would look forward to it every year. Riding the rides were so much fun and playing the different games. I would always bring home a gold fish bowl. It was so cool being able to watch the Fall Festival activites from our dining room window. In the summer, the boys would always be playing baseball. The teachers were very caring and dedicated and I still remember their names. One exception was the kinderegarten teacher, Ms Dahlke who was never on time to open up her classrooom (due to a drinking problem-that I learned years later). It was tough standing outside in the courtyard for 15-30 minutes in the shivering cold with temps sometimes below zero wearing cotton dresses, winter coats with bare legs. Once inside, it would take hours to thaw out. Back in the day, girls were not allowed to wear pants to school. Thankfully that changed in 1971. Hopefully you have enjoyed hearing a little bit about the history of this school and some nostalgia along the way

I love this school. They hire the best teachers. Always kind and great with the kids. Very informative.
