My time at this institution has been a both great and disappointing, and I believe it's important for prospective students to have a clear understanding of what to expect. While some aspects are great and aspiring, there are significant areas that warrant consideration before enrolling. Staff and Administrative Support One of the most challenging aspects I've encountered is the level of administrative support. I've frequently found the staff to be less helpful than desired, often leading to frustration. There's a tendency to pass inquiries along or provide minimal assistance, which can make resolving even simple issues a prolonged process. This unfortunately extends to the counselors as well, who often provide limited guidance in scheduling; it's almost essential to come prepared with your own course plan. Classroom Experience and Professors The professors, for the most part, demonstrate a genuine motivation to teach, which is a definite positive. However, their teaching styles can vary greatly. I've found that some lectures are heavily reliant on extensive talking, with information presented on the board that can be difficult to follow without further explanation. There have been instances where direct questions about problem-solving methods were not adequately addressed, which can be challenging for students seeking clearer understanding. While the professors' intent to educate is clear, the overall environment and administrative support could significantly benefit from improvement. If you're considering this school, I highly recommend being proactive and self-reliant, especially when it comes to navigating administrative processes and course planning. This experience has led me to believe that while there might be individual pockets of excellence, potential students should carefully weigh these factors against their personal learning and support needs.

As a former professor and student here I can say that Compton College has been consistently disappointing in providing the education students expect. While some professors are excellent and genuinely committed to helping students succeed, many leave due to inadequate support and poor administrative oversight. Instruction in several courses does not fully prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need, and navigating different departments can be confusing because information is often incomplete or inconsistent. Programs like free food distribution are helpful, but they cannot replace the need for strong academic instruction and guidance. Some members of the administration have been unhelpful in responding to student concerns, which undermines the college’s mission to serve the community. Overall, the institution often falls short in supporting students effectively, and it is disheartening to see a college with the potential to positively impact its community struggle in this way. For those looking to take a few classes to meet transfer requirements, caution and selectivity are advised, but for pursuing a full degree, other schools in the Los Angeles Community College District—such as Long Beach City College, El Camino College, and Cerritos College—provide more consistent guidance, stronger resources, and a better overall educational experience. Compton College is best avoided if possible.
