What Parents Say
YWCA Discovery Center receives mixed reviews. Multiple parents praise the caring staff and supportive environment, particularly for families in crisis situations. However, several parents report significant administrative and communication issues, including difficulty reaching staff by phone, repeated paperwork problems, and inconsistent follow-up.
We’ve been with the child care program for a couple years now and it keeps going downhill. It’s nearly impossible to get ahold of the finance lady. I don’t have complaints about teachers for the most part but they aren’t very helpful with upcoming events such as non school day reminders etc. but don’t worry they’ll definitely remind you about their fundraisers. Paperwork is always a nightmare and they make you do it twice a year the same exact details every time. There’s got to be an easier way when information doesn’t ever change! It’s hard to get actual physical papers too, they(office people) act like it’s an issue when you ask for it. But I waste my time trying to fill out paperwork in their website and it doesn’t even work! I don’t see much care, compassion or organization with some of these things. Kind of a miserable experience and not getting better. I try calling office people and rarely do I get in touch with anyone. Hope it gets better
Great value, the kids have a good time, but.... YWCA childcare services is difficult to get a hold of over the phone. Terri struggles with filing your submitted registration paperwork, has difficulty with comprehension, and seems to regularly misunderstand and make mistakes.
It was a fine shelter but the staff either 1 break rules or 2 start arguments for absolutely no reason
As far as shelters go, this one is decent. Rooms are nice sized, you can buy and prepare your own meals, and some of the staff are really nice. My experience there wasn't great. I have severe SAD and GAD, and I was really struggling with my life and everyone in it when I went there. At first it was okay, then it just got to be really disappointing. I didn't fit in there at all. It was really hard for me to get used to not only communal living, but being isolated from my mom and my oldest son who was 17 at the time. I ended up getting kicked out for curfew violations bc my anxiety was so severe that I would just leave and stay overnight instead of getting prior approval. I finally was able to start opening up a tiny bit and telling them that I was having a really hard time there, when I got stuck after an overnight. I had no way to get there in time and when I got ahold of them and explained what happened.. it didn't matter. So I ended up back in the same situation I was in when I moved there. And all my things were left behind. Not one staff took it up on themselves to follow up. Not a phone call or even a text message. And this is a domestic abuse shelter! I think my experience would have been different if they had just tried to get to know me, instead of basing their opinions on the very little I was able to express.
Im writing this review a year or so later …..I came across the reviews as I was just coming to get the phone number to put on a rental application…..anyways I came to Wisconsin and found this shelter on google fleeing from my abuser in Illinois. I stayed here for a total of 6 months. Me and my kids are very grateful of every staff member there. We created special bonds w. Everyone. , miss Danielle, miss Angie, miss Theresa, and miss Cindy. Lucas, Kat, Sam everyone was awesome. I made friends w. Almost every family there. I even still talk to a woman I met there. It’s very clean when everyone is on board w. Their chores. You cook and eat your own food. But there’s always something there if you can’t or don’t have anything. The rooms were big. Enough bathrooms. Best shelter I’ve ever been to. Of course you have some ppl who just aren’t ready to get there stuff together. But if you want genuine support on your journey this is a great place ❤️
