I was in a Domestic Violence situation for a year and a half, during that time I was being harassed and victim shamed by a girl named Christina Whitmore and her whole friend group. When it came time for me to be ready to leave the situation I was in I wanted to go there for help but learned that she was a domestic advocate there. I posted a FB status saying that people that support domestic violence shouldn’t work there and she has been harassing me and giving my address out to people on fb because of it. Fortunately she doesn’t work there any more, but from the horrible reviews this place has and finding out that A couple of my friends had bad experiences with this place, (one resulting in the Sexual assault of a child after they turned her down.) I’m gonna pass. This doesn’t seem like a place that helps women, and all the good reviews look fake.

I called them seeking help while fleeing domestic violence they said i didnt meet there requirements which the main one is on the verge of homelessness and I was. They didnt help me at all and told me to go else where. It seems that others who seek their help are refused also. So how are they actually helping and who are they helping?

I do not recommend the YWCA to anyone in the LGBTQ+ community or any man experiencing intimate partner violence. I have reached out to the YWCA multiple times in desperate need of assistance,s eeking safety for both myself and my dog, only to be repeatedly told that my only option was a general shelter. This response has been not only inadequate but also dismissive of the things I'm going through. First, having a pet makes securing shelter far more difficult, as most facilities do not accommodate animals. Second, the shelters in Spokane have been at capacity due to the cold weather, making the “just go to a shelter” suggestion unrealistic. Third, and most importantly, I was in a same-sex relationship, meaning my abuser, who remains a direct threat to me, could easily access the very places I would be sent. There has been no consideration for my safety, no meaningful effort to address my needs, and no solutions offered beyond generic, ineffective recommendations. The lack of support from the YWCA has left me feeling completely disregarded, as if what I have gone through does not matter. Spokane already has a severe lack of resources for adult gay men and, more broadly, for men experiencing intimate partner violence. The fact that there is no safe housing option for men in these situations is unacceptable. I am left to continue suffering, homeless, without access to basic necessities, and unable to even begin rebuilding my life. I feel isolated, lost, alone and without any sense of direction. The YWCA has done nothing to help remove the overwhelming barriers in my way, nor have they offered any actionable solutions. Despite completing an intake process, I was later told I needed to do it again, something I currently cannot do, as I am living in my broken-down car with no income, no transportation, and no way to get there. My car has been broken into multiple times due to being left unattended, and I fear it will either be vandalized again or towed since I cannot move it. All I have asked for, which has been my absolute priority, is a safe place where I no longer have to live in fear of what my ex might do to me. Yet, I have been met with nothing but roadblocks. It is disheartening that despite their stated mission to support survivors of domestic violence, the YWCA has failed to provide meaningful help for someone in my position. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the YWCA to anyone seeking safety from an abusive situation, as their services are clearly not available to everyone, despite what their website claims.

I was honestly a little scared and nervous coming in because I didn't know what to expect, was afriad of being judged and I never had a stylist before. But I was welcomed with open, warm arms by Jill and the staff. They made me feel comfortable and safe in an area that I loved being in because they allowed me to be myself. I felt really good, appreciated and more confident after leaving. No matter your background, who you are, where you come from, and where you are in transitioning in life, they never judge you in all your circumstances. I love and appreciate their missions and values and stand by them and their name. "Our Sister's Closet" really made me feel like I am family!! Thank you so so much!!
