We screened 27 daycares/preschools and visited 6. We chose Teaching Tots because: (1) It feels like home. My wife and I grew up in tight knit immigrant families with loving aunties and friendly vibes. That’s exactly how Teaching Tots is! It’s the only school where our 3-year-old son immediately began playing with the teachers and kids. At the other school visits, he just played with the toys and kept to himself. (2) Free play. Teaching Tots has a big backyard and two large rooms. The children are allowed to move in and outside freely (with teachers monitoring for safety). The space is designed for autonomy and tons of outdoor time. Other local preschools have no outdoor space, so the kids only get 90 minutes of fresh air during the daily outing. There’s no time limit to fresh air at Teaching Tots. (3) Diversity. The teachers come from different parts of the world and so do the kids. We live in San Francisco because we want to be part of a melting pot. We want our son to be comfortable around all races. It’s a small world after all! Teaching Tots is the most diverse school we witnessed. (4) Golden Gate Park outings. The teachers regularly take the kids to play under the trees, or visit Cal Academy, Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden. This is AMAZING!!!! GGP is a global destination for tourists. The school is making great use of it and putting our tax dollars to work, while also giving children vital access to nature. It calms their nervous systems. (5) Academics. The teachers integrate letters and numbers into everyday activities. A 2.5 year old at Teaching Tots was able to point out the letter K, even though it wasn’t in his name. Amazing! The children are learning to hold crayons properly and write the alphabet. And it’s happening organically throughout the day. (I am not a fan of preschools with rigid school-like schedules. Our kids are too young for that!) (6) Price and hours. The school is SO affordable and they keep their doors open 7am-6pm, no long holiday breaks. We are working parents with demanding jobs. It’s great to know they have our backs and aren’t breaking the bank. We are SOOOOO happy with our choice! Our son is having a blast at school. He doesn’t want to leave some days! He drags us inside to stay and play and dance at pick-up. It feels great as a parent to end the workday with a dance party with a group of adorable, happy children. Teachers Alice, Melinda and Sofia are welcoming and communicative about how each day has gone. It’s also wonderful to get pictures of our child watching scuba divers and fish at the aquarium or playing by the pond with his little friends. We are so grateful to this gem in the Inner Sunset. Teaching Tots is a true community institution.
My daughter loves singing, dancing, drawing and writing at Teaching Tots preschool. She likes the teachers and enjoys playing with other children here. The teachers are very nice and friendly, they take good care of the kids! They provide the kids with breakfast and snacks, and also help the kids warm up the lunch if needed. There is a very nice yard with slides at preschool, the kids could have enough indoor and outdoor activities daily, and they could have a good nap in the afternoon. One more good thing is that the tuition is much cheaper than other preschools nearby. I highly recommend Teaching Tots Preschool to you. You will love it! 😊
