I attended this school from 1982 through 1993, and in retrospect, it was truly a fantastic experience that shaped so much of my personal success in life. Now, at 50 years old, I still hold the utmost respect for the all the teachers and administrators who dedicated their time and energy not only to me, but to every student who passed through the doors of Tanglewood Open, Mountain Open High, and Jefferson Open School. What made Open School so unique for me was the opportunity to pursue learning far beyond the standard curriculum. I was able to study abroad in Germany for six months, and before that, I took extended language and cultural courses at Denver University. The school also provided incredible travel-based learning experiences—including trips to Mexico and Florida for marine biology courses, where I even became scuba certified (a certification I’ve proudly maintained into adulthood). I also had the privilege of exploring advanced subjects such as human genetics under the guidance of my science teacher and advisor at the time, Judi Justice. She was not only a fantastic educator but also a true mentor whom I deeply respect to this day. I still partake in ceramics and painting which I contribute to my art teacher Susie Bogard. There are so many teachers that deserve accolades at that school who impacted me in so many positive ways. Jefferson County Open was more than a school—it was a community that encouraged curiosity, independence, and growth for the students who put forth the effort to be part of that community. I am profoundly grateful for the experiences I had there and the impact they continue to have on my life.
Best school I've gone to, highly recommend for kids who need looser education and more freedom of choice in their schedule! Awesome learning opportunity along with a decent variety of college-leveled classes to boot!
My experience at JCOS was wonderful! The guidance offered by all educators is second to none. The environment is welcoming and accepting for all students and visitors who attend. The connections and friendships developed through this school are everlasting, mature, and respectful. The educational system is propelling every student for a successful life. This is not a career training center (as common to many schools it seems), this is a life training center. Travel/learning opportunities are boundless. The manifestation of destinies occurs in this school, with these educators, every single day of every single students education. There is no experience in life that can match the education this particular school can offer. I have always, and will always highly recommend this school.
great sense of community but the education itself is lacking, although some classes are very well developed especially for my learning style others are not as good for myself
This school has been a great experience for me. Not have I only learned school, like subjects but social and personal aspects as well. The fact that the teachers let you do your own project to complete a grade shows that they know you have more to present to the table. JCOS is definitely the school for me.
