What Parents Say
Jean Lyle Children's Center receives unanimous 5-star ratings from parents who praise the caring, experienced staff, small teacher-to-student ratios, and play-based curriculum. Parents consistently highlight strong socio-emotional development, enriching activities (art, field trips, performances), and a welcoming community as transformative experiences for their children.
Finding Jean Lyle was a life changing experience for our family. We did an extensive search of pre-K options, including several of the top-tier private schools in St. Paul. The moment we walked into Jean Lyle, we felt at home: the caring, experienced, creative team of teachers have cultivated a unique community for kids to explore, grow, feel seen, be cared for, and thrive. Our child was there for 3 years and it was always the case that we had: (1) small child to teacher ratios, (2) strong learning and development, with observable progress, (3) consistent staff with strong qualifications and low turnover, (4) an environment conducive to play/art/learning/exploration - the ideal preschool setting! (5) exceptional communication with parents. Highlights include: art in the "sunshine room," class plays including "Tacky the Penguin," science units with a special space unit!, beach day, field trips to the library and nature center, so many art projects, a tight-knit community, and so much care for little ones! We love Jean Lyle and hope you get to experience it too. Our 5 year old would like to add to this review "I love my teachers."
There is no better place for children to start out their educational and social/ emotional journey than Jean Lyle. My family spends nearly an hour in the car every day to get to Jean Lyle and we would gladly spend twice as long to go to this incredible place. Our daughter has blossomed under the expert and loving care of teachers many of whom who have been teaching here for decades. The student teacher ratio is amazing and the community of parents and kids is the kind of inclusive and welcoming space we all need and deserve. I don’t write google reviews but Jean Lyle is pure magic and every parent should be lucky enough to be able to send their child here and watch them take flight.
I highly recommend Jean Lyle for any parent seeking a nurturing and supportive environment for their young child. All teachers are incredibly caring and attentive, truly going above and beyond to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. With a low student-to-teacher ratio (very rare these days!), each child receives the personalized attention they need to thrive. What stood out most for us is their strong emphasis on socio-emotional development. The teachers helped my child develop essential skills like empathy, self-regulation, and communication. Jean Lyle also does an excellent job of preparing children for elementary school. Through a combination of play-based learning and structured activities, children are equipped with the foundational skills they’ll need, both academically and socially, to succeed in their next educational step.
Searching for part-time (or full-time!) care for your preschooler or kindergartener? This is a shameless plug for one of our favorite places on earth, Jean Lyle Children's Center Preschool and Kindergarten. Two summers ago I was in a panic not finding ANY part time programs for my boys. None of us felt ready for full day education away from home, but I didn't want to homeschool 😬🤷🏻♀️ We began with one of my children attending last year as a 3/4 year old and another child went to half-day Kindergarten. Now this year the younger is enrolled in their Kindergarten program. We cannot get enough of this place, and I have absolutely no hesitation singing praises to anyone who will listen. 5 Things you'll find a Jean Lyle: 1. Small class sizes with an unheard of teacher:student ratio 2. A staff that not just invests in their students, but enjoys it along the way! 3. A community where many of the children see each other outside of school for playdates because of the strong bond formed in the classroom 4. *Play based schedule that promotes a love for learning* 5. Inclusive language and heavier topics addressed, raising good humans for our world (JLCC doesn't shy away from harder topics like race, ableism, inclusive language, etc by encouraging open dialogue with the kids and reading books that highlight difficult topics. We found SO much value in this, and it prompted many good conversations at home.) Please go to Jean Lyle. There is not one person I've ever spoken with that hasn't had an incredible experience there.
If you’ve got kids preschool to kindergarten age I can’t recommend Jean Lyle enough. It’s got tiny teacher to kid ratio (like for a class of ~15 kids there were 3 teachers and a student or parent helper), exceptionally kind and play-based learning, access to an enormous gym, and a whole “sunshine” room packed with art supplies. In St Paul and it’s worth the drive from Minneapolis. There’s a cult-following for a reason.
