ISD is a very racist and bias and school district, especially when it comes to young African American boys. As a parent I would strongly advise any African Americans looking to relocate to Independence school district to reconsider and go else where. This school district dose not care about educating our students. There have been incidents that have happened at the schools and the district failed to notify the parents. I am very displeased at how we were treated and being in there schools has directly affected my students self esteem. We will be moving and hopefully be able to find a more diverse area where all students are valued and understood. I would rate this district 1 starts from me only because 0 was not an option. There was nothing amazing about this district.

TLDR:my 11 year old sister has been abused physically and mentally at this district, and has been suspended from September 2024 to November 2025 with no work being sent by the district. They won’t even take my calls about it. If I could give this district 0 stars I would. To start off my sister went to mill creek and was physically abused by the recovery teacher. The same year she was moved to independence academy, she did amazing there for the first couple of years. Then they decided to mainstream (let my sister go back and forth between ia and mill creek) until she went full mainstream (stayed at mill creek) she once again got verbally abused by the new librarian and decided on her own to go back to ia. Fast forward to this year my sister is at ia, she wore a crop top like every girl in her grade is wearing now and got told by a male staff member to cover up (my sister has been diagnosed with adhd as well as ptsd) she asked the staff member why he was making such a big deal about it. The male staff member then decided to take my sister to the so called office and proceeded to take away her zip up hoodie that my sister was trying to put on! She got mad of course and started yelling at the staff member to give her back her hoodie. A teacher restrained my sister ( it says to not restrain her in her iep) my sister retaliated of course because physical touch by an adult triggers a ptsd flight or fight response she hit a staff member due to her response, my sister has been suspended since September of 2024 apparently because she retaliated against a staff member. Today was supposed to be the day she was off of suspension via court, come to find out it doesn’t matter if the court said that she can come back this district will twist their words and make it seem like they said something else. My sister won’t be welcome back until November of 2025…. Now this is where my real issue starts my sister has not been given any instruction on how to continue learning from home nor have they sent any thing to myself or our grandmother about how my sister (who is in the 6th grade) can continue her education from home! This school district is absolutely terrible never and I mean NEVER send your child here if they have mental health problems or any type of diagnosis! Your child will be abused physically and mentally by the so called staff, that don’t want to do their job!

This year for enrollment and bus passes was a train wreck, we've been in the isd for 6 years and never had issues enrolling. This yr we enrolled online as always and never got school schedule so we called and they said proof of residency didn't pass so the entire application didn't pass and they never notified us!! We would have showed up first day of school and been turned away, zero communication. Had to take off work and spent all day jumping through hoops to do what they wanted, so disorganized I am so disappointed in them. Also we had approved bus passes weeks ago and then they told us we don't and have to start that process all over again so now it's going to prevent me from getting to work on time till we get passes and is jeopardizing my job and they don't care. I will say they have great teachers for the most part and I'm pleased with the teachers my kids have had, there are a few who are not good but overall happy with the teachers, they were very caring and kind to my kids. I'm extremely disappointed in lack of communication and making everything extremely difficult for enrollment and bus passes

If I could give 0 stars I would.. this whole district is a joke from the hearing officers to the principals to the superintendents. They can't even return simple phone calls until parents blow up and act out of character then they want to kiss butt to try & make the district look better! So disappointing that I bought a home in this district where they do not care about our students!

Independence school district doesn't help children who have learning disabilities. They neglected my child's need for years, denying her testing and saying she didn't need the help when clearly she did. With no guidance I finally figured out how to go about getting her help, this year she was diagnosed and now they say, they will forward her evaluation on to the school district but can't start anything over the summer. Such a joke of school district and the amount of bullying that goes on in the schools is disturbing.
