I attended this school from kindergarten to 5th grade and I can honestly say some of my fondest memories have been from Heartwood. The teachers are the best around, the management built the school from the ground up and it shows in their love, passion, and expertise. I have friends who I met at Heartwood in kindergarten and am still friends with almost two decades later. Heartwood may be unorthodox, but there are no other schools in a hundred mile radius which will give your child half the love and education that Heartwood will.
Both my son and daughter attended Heartwood Montessori, starting in the Children's House and finishing at Upper Elementary. Sue Daniels, the director, accommodated my children's individual strengths and weaknesses by placing them in the proper classes so they could succeed to their fullest potential. There is a special kindergarten/grade 1 transitional class for those children who aren't quite ready for first grade based on their age, as well as teachers that will challenge and engage the most precocious of students. The school field trips are true learning experiences that also include motor skill and life skill growth through activities like swimming. My daughter left Heartwood to attend Wake County Public Schools in 6th grade, and she received the high score on WCPSS benchmark testing that year for her grade at her school. I can't recommend Heartwood highly enough.
My 4 years old son just started HW this year and I felt the difference of this school almost immediately. My kid has a need for special education. When I brought this up to the teachers and director, they set up a meeting with me and include almost everyone who is involved. Couple weeks later, the class room teacher set up another time to discuss with me in details how my son is doing there and strategies to better help him. The teacher, Ms. Liz (I bet all other teachers will do a same good job), is truly an educator who knows a lot about teaching and the kids. I feel she even knows my son more than I do just for couple weeks of school. The entire school staff team is very supportive to accommodate my son’s transition to a different school in the afternoon for his special education needs. Overall, the school really considers the education seriously and brings it to a whole new level based on each kid’s potential. My son is happy and learning everyday!
This is school has been like a second home to my kids. It's such a caring, comfortable place for children to learn. They're very focused on critical thinking, following your passions, and collaboration.
