What Parents Say
ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN, INC. receives mixed reviews. Three parents praise the small center size, engaged staff, play-based curriculum, enrichment activities, and excellent communication. Two parents report serious safety concerns including unexplained injuries to their infants and inadequate incident response, and cite lack of support for children with special needs.
We have loved EFC - the center is smaller than others we initially looked at, which has been a great fit for our family! The staff is super engaged and caring (all of the teachers know all of the students, not just those in their classroom), and communication is available in so many formats - daily updates (including pictures) in a free app, plus conferences usually in the fall, monthly newsletters via email, and then just chatting at drop off and pick up. I have also found that if/when I have other specific needs or questions, it's no problem to work with the Director in person, through email, or over the phone, which I really appreciate. I love that they use a play-based curriculum, and that they offer just the right amount of attention to our kids! I also appreciate that they offer extra enrichment opportunities - my daughter is in dance, and over the summer and fall was also in soccer at the center. It's great because she gets exposure to a lot of different activities, but we can still keep our evenings focused on family time. In addition to play and activities, she is also learning SO much! At 3.5 years old, she can spell and write her name, count to 100, and knows the days of the week, and months of the year (I have a couple of nieces 6 months older and younger than her who attend other centers and aren't able to do all of these things, so I attribute the initial learning to EFC 😊). There are so many other opportunities throughout the year - water days in the summer, visits from outside presenters like Costume Kim, parents being able to come in and read to toddler and preschool classes, Valentine's Day and Halloween celebrations. I highly recommend EFC!
I removed my 13 months child from this place after a serious traumatic event. I started noticing Injuries when my child was 3 months old my child came with a deep scratch above his right eye and was told he scratched himself even though he had hand gloves on him. 3 months later he had another deep scratch across his forehead and he was in so much pain that night from the inflammation I couldn’t even touch his face, this time I was told another older child walked up to him and scratched my 5 months old son’s face. This time I started getting concerned because my understanding was that parents pay good money to these people and entrust them with protection of their children from stuff like this ; anyway due to my work schedule situation I had to just let it go but I started inspecting my son’s entire body on daily basis when I give him shower. Few months passed then one morning after dropping my son I received the daily picture usually they capture when your child is smiling/ laughing then moments later (~1 hr) 1 received a text reading “your son looks upset and can’t move his left hand and avoids holding anything using his left hand, he might need his hand checked.” Okay here I am I just got to work, I literally just dropped my son and he was fine I even received the daily “happy picture” they send it shows my son holding a cup with both his hands drinking from a sippy cup. This text really shook me to the core, I immediately called the daycare to check on what’s going on BUT the response I got was as flat as if this person was reading from the text they just sent me, showed no concern whatsoever. So I inquired for more information trying to figure out if this could be from a fall, neurological issue, stroke etc. the response I got was very sad to say the least all I got was “I don’t know he just stopped using his left hand” and that they didn’t see if he fell even though the day care is a 4 walled small space and one can see every thing at a glance and there are no more than 5 infants in the room). I became even more worried so I called my husband who was on his way driving to Des Moines, Iowa for work. He had to drive back because he also was very worried this could be a serious issue since there was limited information provided by the daycare. My husband also tried to call the daycare to also inquire on more information but he also got same flat answer but this time he was also told when I dropped my son he seemed upset so this could have happened before I dropped him, yes this is what my husband was told (shamelessly!). So we wondered how does our son use his left hand having his breakfast/ smiling on the picture they sent then 1hour later he can’t use his hand but again this could have happened before he got there?? Anyway I picked up my son and rushed him to children’s emergency department for assemment which they ruled out neurological/ stroke and that his arm came out of the place and likely was traumatic because when they did arm reduction procedure he cried in agony and was in so much pain they had to give him some painkillers there and we had to get more pain killers for the night. Anyway my husband later went back and spoke to the Daycare manager/ director about this but he got no further details, the director simply responded “ I was off that day when it happened so I don’t know and they don’t have cameras in the building”. We ended up removing our son from this place and paying another medical bill for our infant being at this place. Anyway in-short I don’t recommend this place also if looking for a daycare make sure they have real time video recordings. Good luck!
We love this daycare! It's a small center and many of the teachers and staff have been there for multiple years. I like that our kids can see the same faces every day, and it's clear that the teachers care about the kids and enjoy seeing them grow through the program. I'm so happy we found this place!
Daycare center is not good with kids with special needs. They are not patient with them and do not work with them. Classes too big with too wide of age group. Be careful sending any kids with special needs. Over priced! Kathy is unprofessional and will hide and avoid you if something isn't right!
The staff and activities are wonderful! The app helps me know how my child is doing and interacting with other children. Great experience!
