This church teaches law and gospel. The pastors go out of their way to make people welcome. Their programs and outreach are wonderful. We transferred our membership 2 years ago and have never looked back. It helps to become known if you just smile and say hello - like with any place where people gather. We felt welcome from day one.
I’m new to RVA and drove to this church planning to worship here this morning. Maybe I don’t handle surprises well, but I wasn’t expecting to have people look right through me. Not one single person said good morning to me on my way in or after walking in. None of the greeters even offered me a bulletin. I was standing right in front of one having waited my turn, and she looked right past me to talk to someone else whom she clearly knew. The other greeter also had continuously been in conversation with the same family ahead of me. I looked straight at a man wearing vestments and a stole, so one of the pastors I’m sure, and he just turned his eyes down and kept walking. I felt unwelcome so I walked out. Maybe I should’ve been more resilient, I just don’t think I ever felt like that in a church ever before. It was uncomfortable.
I have enjoyed several great services here. The people are very friendly and Pastor Phillip makes the material relevant & relatable. The Easter Sunday Service was especially nice and was a memory I will not forget anytime soon.
I wish this church was better. I am new to the Lutheran faith, trying to convert, as this was the first church that I checked out. I attended this church for about a month. I do like how the service is more traditional and Pastor Phillip. The congregation is the problem. Many people that attend this church have been going to this church for years or is born and raised in this church, nothing wrong with that. The problem that I am having is when you are new and trying to make conversation people will ignore you and outright dismiss you. A lot of the congregation is older, and as a young adult they will judge you for just being young. I was also judged because I attended this church alone as none of my family are Lutherans. I have been a Christian all of my life and I'm very proud to be a Christian but this behavior is not Christian behavior. Sorry Epiphany but you are just one big clique.
Great service. Friendly people.
