What Parents Say
Copple Family YMCA is a highly-rated facility in Lincoln, Nebraska featuring excellent pools with toddler-friendly shallow areas, modern gym equipment, and a well-regarded Child Watch childcare program. Parents consistently praise the clean facilities, attentive staff, and variety of programs for families. One negative experience was reported regarding a lifeguard's enforcement of rules.
This morning, I visited the Copple YMCA with my stepson to swim during family hours (9–11 a.m.). While we were playing with the toys provided for children, around 10:20 a staff member abruptly told us to leave and took away my stepson’s toys. Not wanting to create a scene, we went to the family room to dry off. When I attempted to use the clothing dryer, it was marked “out of order.” Because of this, I briefly entered the women’s locker room with my 2-year-old stepson (whose eyes I covered, though at his age he is not aware of others’ bodies) to use the facilities. At that point, another staff member and an unfamiliar individual verbally confronted me in a hostile manner. As we were leaving, staff at the front desk also spoke to me in a dismissive and disrespectful way. I tried to calmly explain that I only entered the locker room because the dryer was broken, but my concerns were ignored. What troubles me most is that the treatment we received seemed motivated not by policy or procedure, but by bias. While I am saddened by how I was treated, I am especially concerned for my stepson, who was unfairly singled out and treated poorly because of his Hispanic background—though fortunately, he is too young to fully understand what happened. In my experience, the Copple YMCA did not provide a welcoming or inclusive environment. Based on this incident, I cannot recommend this facility to other families.
Outdoor pool- was hard to find info or photos before we went. I was worried because we wanted a zero entry but this is a very nice small outdoor pool. Kiddo friendly with shallow steps and an initial entry depth of 1.5 feet. It gradually slopes down to about 4 feet. There is a roped off area that's 5 feet with a water slide (closed when we were there). The best part is a nice splash pad area with little slide and water table area for the kids. Lots of nice Adirondack style chairs and loungers. A few hanging shade areas. 2 outdoor private bathroom/shower rooms. Lifeguards were all super nice and observant.
The Copple Family YMCA has been an incredible find for our family, especially with a toddler in tow. One of the features we appreciate most is their 1.5-foot-deep area in the pool, which is absolutely perfect for young kids. It’s shallow enough that our toddler can safely play, splash, and build confidence in the water without us constantly having to hold him. It’s a rare and much-appreciated feature you don’t see in many pools around town. In addition, the pool slowly deepens as you move forward, allowing kids to gain confidence at their own pace, exploring a little more as they grow. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and the facility is clean and well-maintained. Lifeguards on duty keep a close watch, which gives us extra peace of mind while our little one plays. As usual, they have 10-minute safety breaks each hour, so be aware that all the kids will need to spend some time outside the pool. Beyond the toddler-friendly pool area, the Y offers a great selection of programs, fitness classes, and adult equipment, making it an excellent spot for the whole family. We’re so glad we joined, and highly recommend it for young families!
I hesitated to review this YMCA, but this facility needs to be aware of the inconvenience and lack of common sense. I took my grandkids to swim in the indoor pool, and the lifeguard, Dan, told me we had 30 minutes before they closed for adults only. My two small grandkids would not bother the elderly ladies exercising in the water, but we had to leave the pool after only 30 minutes!!! I had to pay full-day admission. The ladies in the office said we could come back - it’s all day pass. (Certain hours, of course.) How convenient-not! The lifeguard, said they couldn’t go off the small slide because they weren’t certified swimmers - give me a break! I was in the water with them (4 & 6) and they had life jackets. But, he said they need to pass a swimming test to go off the small slide. Do you think all the water parks require kids have a swimming certificate to go off a slide?
Be warned before signing up! I signed up for a membership online. I read their FAQ section on their website which states to cancel your membership, notify them in writing at least 5 business days prior to the end of the month. The website also says "We never require a contract at the YMCA. All memberships are on a month-to-month basis." That sounded good to me knowing I just wanted to try a membership and see how it went. The facility is ok, but I hadn't been able to use the facility enough to make it worth the high price tag (compared to other gyms) so I notified them in writing WELL before the 5 business days prior to the end of the month that I was cancelling. A couple days later I have a voicemail from them saying that even though I cancelled my membership, that I will be charged again for next month because of the "membership agreement" that I signed states that I can't cancel within 30 days. Eventually, I come to figure out that they hide a little line in the agreement that states that you can't cancel until your account has drafted once...which the initial draft apparently doesn't count as the one draft, they will draft an additional month even if you followed everything their website cancellation policy says to successfully cancel. What happened to "never requiring a contract"? What happened with " All memberships are on a month-to-month basis"? So just a warning...if you're signing up for a month just to try out the Y, just know that you're signing up to pay 2 months no matter what their website states and even if you follow the cancellation policy.
