What Parents Say

Parents appreciate the responsive communication and thoughtful program coordination. One concern was noted regarding maintenance at Canyon View Dog Park.
Every public restroom along the River Front Trail is closed. This makes it very difficult to enjoy the trail. I was with a group of Senior Citizens hiking the Blue Heron section on Tues, Jan 7th, and we had to hurry back to the van and then drive to a gas station in order to find a bathroom. I'm sure that families with small children have also faced this. OPEN THE BATHROOMS!
Happy to report we have formed a Western Slope Dog Parks United alliance with the parks department and improvements are under way. Thank you GJ community for coming together. Canyon View Dog Park is a disgrace, neglected, water fountains do not work, grass not cut regularly, irrigation is abysmal, trash can with feces needs to be emptied regularly, before a 30 gallon container is full. The smell in this heat, at the entrance when one walks in, is overwhelming and unhealthy. Obviously they have the expertise by the ball fields great care, but this window to people passing through on I70 with their pets, is a disgrace.
Hello I want to write about my concerns I felt this way last summer and now again this summer. My son has attended GJ Parks and Rec camp for 2 summers in a row. The young kids they have watching them seem to have very little skills in watching and dealing with children and I honestly don't feel like my son is safe at Grand Junction summer camp. He has told me multiple times no one watches them when they're in the pool my mother went to pick him up today and it took them 30 minutes to find my son at the pool and that is terrifying. This is not the first time. They make them walk long distances with little to no water breaks and Shout Out them to walk faster. The parks and rec should not have them walking miles to places for activities it is not safe in the Heat and some kids cannot handle the heat and have the endurance to make these long walks it is very unpractical and very unsafe with traffic and these little teenagers that are supposed to be watching them. I don't feel like like my son is safe at Camp unless he's at one of the centers all day instead of walking around town or swimming in the pool where no Camp people know where he's at or what he's doing or making sure that other campers are not shoving him underwater like it happens all the time and he tells me. There is so many safety concerns about the Grand Junction Parks and Rec and I really feel like you need more experienced Camp leaders and to reevaluate your hot summer trips you make these kids walk on not to mention the process of always showing up to pick your kid up and then never knowing where your kid is is absolutely terrifying. I spend most of my days at work wondering if I'm going to get a horrible call from the camp saying that my son is either lost or got hurt at the swimming pool because of their lack of supervision. I am extremely disappointed and hurt by the lack of care of the staff and for the Parks and Rec to even have their reputation on such an unstructured Summer camp that is run supposedly by the city.
If you're going to a city park anywhere near downtown bring your own diapers. They closed all the restrooms, replaced them with a single non ADA Porta-Potty where the existing structure had 4 to 6 toilets with one or two being a urinal. If there's enough parking and enough people casually walking through, your right to relieve yourself is gone. People with prostate problems, wheelchairs, elderly... Going to a public park can be a very embarrassing thing. City council will not let people assemble unless you now pay for a permit to use something that's all ready bought and paid for. What Grand Junction is doing is absolutely disgusting.
Why is it most of the parks have no basket ball hoops? My teen son likes to play basketball. We drove to Lincoln, Rocket, Sherwood Park and no basket ball court. It was disappointing. I noticed the two biggest parks did, Canyon View and Longs Park had them, but this was a longer commute, and out of of our way. Is it possible to place hoops at some of the other parks so that our teen kids have easier access to shoot hoops?
