My wife and I are learning how to ride a motorcycle and wanted to practice weaving in between cones (going less than 5 mph) in the empty parking lot this evening. We thought Morning Star would be a great place. We have attended a service there in the past and have lived in the community since we were little kids. Right when we get there a man comes out (someone in a blue pick up truck) and says that we need to leave as we would damage their parking lot. Really?!?! And you’re having a car show there in a few days? I work for a church in Cincinnati and we allow people to practice for their driving tests (both car and motorcycle) all the time and I can tell you it has never damaged our parking lot. It has been a great way to reach people where they are at, minister to them and welcome them to our church and community. We were wrong to think we would be treated like that at Morning Star. It is pretty sad. Given that experience we will not set foot in that church again!
For the first time in my 46 years I walked out of my first visit to this church. From the sonic assault that was the drum-heavy worship band to politically charged attacks on the culture of the church and political dog whistles toward red state voters, I lasted a whole half hour. I literally broke down in my car longing for the days of a sober, Christ-centered worship experience again - the ones we had before 2020. I’m no new Christian, but I have not been attending because of the pandemic and now I feel lost among believers because of the current political and cultural climate of hate. Morningstar in Centerville will, sadly, not be my new church home.
