What Parents Say
Central Queens YM&YWHA is a well-regarded community center offering diverse youth programs including swimming, camps, and fitness classes with generally attentive and caring staff. Parents praise the affordability, variety of programs, and individual instructor quality, though some report operational challenges with scheduling and facility management.
The community house provides important services, teachers are amazing, Classes are Fantastic. However, my experience with the front desk staff has been disappointing. The lady at the desk often gives us uncomfortable and unwelcoming looks, (I don't know if it is just me) It makes it difficult to feel at ease when entering the building. Her behavior feels unfriendly and dismissive. A community space should make everyone feel respected and included, and unfortunately, that has not been my experience.
My son has been attending the swim program at Commonpoint for the past year, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The instructors are incredibly patient, kind, and genuinely invested in the kids' progress. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to support my son’s swimming journey. A special thank you to Dawn, the program director, who goes above and beyond. She truly cares about the students and always takes the time to listen and help with anything you need. Her dedication and personal touch make a big difference. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a supportive and professional swim program!
Front desk woman is the antithesis of a customer service-oriented woman. I ask if I can do a day pass and she looks at me like I am taking up her time and says "no." I ask her if I can try out the Y (which I have done at other Ys and she says "no" and then "it depends on the day of the week" and then "it depends on the time of day/session" - and it was open swim. Finally she agrees to go back and ask if I can try it out. She comes back and says I can do a guest pass for $20. I fill everything out and then she said that she'll only take cash which I don't have so I have to leave without a swim workout and having met a very unpleasant human.
The class was full and I was placed in the back of the room as teachers was writing on the board for kids to copy I had to take pictures to see what they wrote because I didn’t have my glasses or contacts and I got terminated for being on my phone for working so I wouldn’t recommend at all
A great agency that runs alot of different programs out of a limited space, providing youth and enrichment services to a community that doesn’t have many options.
