Ashtabula County Family Y Child Care

I’m a member of the YMCA in Boardman Ohio. The staff there is welcoming and helpful within anything the members need. I’ve been a member for over 4 years now. I was in the Ashtabula area with my son and figured we would stop by there to use the basketball court. We walked in and there was a younger girl and an older woman who didn’t say one word to us. While I got looked up and down and stared at, I mumbled “hello?? How are you” that’s when the conversation started about how I took my son off my membership and he needed a guest pass. The younger employee looked absolutely clueless about what I needed help with while the older woman employee said “she didn’t know how to do that” she then said I needed to fill out tow papers with my information on it one for me and one for my son. Which I was so confused bc I am already a member and he was a member so he should already be in the system. But she said it will take some time and I mentioned that it wasn’t a problem. As I’m filling out the paper they are just staring at me. My 6 yo was getting very impatient and was dropping his basketball a few times and instead of being polite or even having a welcoming conversation about not bouncing the balls in the lobby she rudely said “there’s no bouncing basketballs in the lobby” which I understand but from the moment we walked in it was just very awkward and unprofessional. After filling out the paper work she typed somethings into the computer and said “ugh he’s already in this system” they were both agitated and I kept saying sorry and trying to make light of the situation and saying “it’s just different everywhere you just never know” and they had nothing to say back just the dirt looks kept coming. The younger employee asked if I was paying cash or card for the guest pass. I first said cash then changed it to card bc I didn’t have enough cash, which annoyed the younger employee. After the transaction there was no welcoming of “enjoy your time” “have a nice day” nothing just silence and more dirty looks. I cried right there because I was just so taken back by how rude and unprofessional and unwelcoming that Yama as was. There was also a older man there he was nice and more helpful. This happened on Oct 29, 2025 around 630pm.

I take the gentle exercise class in the pool! Instructor is very good ! I feel so much better afterwards 😌

I wanted it to work out for me to go here regularly. I really did. It's one of the few positive attributes that Ashtabula City has to offer. The pool is great as lap lanes are put up for all lap swims. the people who work here seem friendly and want to be helpful. Unfortunately, most of the exercise equipment and the men's locker room are located in the basement. It's a dreary experience. The treadmills are in a room that lacks good air flow and fans (the treadmill I was on had a personal fan but there was no way to direct the air flow towards you). A television was blaring loudly during my entire workout on the treadmill. The men's restroom down in the basement, right off the strength resistance room, was abysmal: Two pipes with plastic bags on them where urinals used to exist and one toilet filled with yellow urine which does not flush. The men's locker room is a labyrinth of mostly rented lockers in various rooms. While there are coat racks in the front entry to the locker room, you have to avoid jock straps and underwear drying (?) on them in order to hang up your coat. If you don't mind hanging out in a dreary, unkempt basement during your workout, it could work for you. It didn't work for me.

It is a great place. The swimming pool is clean and organized. The staffs are very nice. The life guard in swimming pool is very nice too. The only issue is that we can not always get notification of close in advance. Some times, when we arrive there, it is closed. So I deduct one star. Other than that, it is great.

not a good place, this is the only ymca that doesnt have designated pickball in the evenings FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE JOBS AND WORK DURING THE DAY, all the other ymca's have that, this one sucks
