We moved to North Carolina from Germany without family and friends. A “place to grow” helped us a lot to make friends and feel at home here. We had a good feeling about leaving our kids at this place right from the start. The first impression was very familiar and loving and nothing has changed. The main language spoken is German. The kids learn many things from German culture. They sing songs, read books, listen to audio books and play games. For all kids who have difficulties understanding German, everything is repeated in English. So in a few weeks your kiddo will understand German and perhaps also speak it at home. :-) There is always a maximum of 12 children on any one day. This makes it possible for the teachers to work individually with each kid. For example, they do handicrafts together or learn to write their first letters. The kids spend a lot of time in nature. The garden offers plenty of opportunities to play various role-playing games. There is a petrol station, a doctor's house, an animal shelter, a car wash, .... The kids have fun riding their bikes, climbing, sliding and swinging. The chickens in the garden also bring the kids a lot of joy. The teachers are very caring and respectful towards the kids. And if somebody needs more attention, they usually get it. The kids learn to take responsibility and treat other kids with respect. Great importance is also attached to healthy eating. Our kids really enjoy going to this place. It was the right decision for us. The kids also receive good preparation for kindergarten/school.
Our three children attended the school and overall it was a loving and caring community. The children had lots of time for outdoor play, learned a decent amount of German, and were prepared for kindergarten when the time came. Parents will need to find a way to maintain the language once the children graduate, but this is to be expected. It’s true the owner is involved with helping the homeless community but we did not consider it a distraction. On the contrary our family occasionally joins in on Sunday nights to help serve them dinner - all for a good cause!
Both of our children attended A Place to Grow fulltime from the age of 18 months until they were 5 years old. It truly became their second home, and countless cherished early childhood memories were created during exciting field trips to downtown Raleigh with the train, visits to JC Raulston Arboretum, and joyful moments of learning to ride balance bikes in the large backyard. As a family fluent in German, it was important to us that our children not only had the opportunity to speak German daily at preschool but also to immerse themselves in the rich culture of children's songs, rhymes, games, and traditions in German. A Place to Grow wonderfully provided this invaluable experience. The small, close-knit community of children spanning different ages proved to be an ideal environment where the older ones assisted and nurtured the younger ones, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support. All in all, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience for our children. A Place to Grow truly exceeded our expectations, and we will forever cherish the care and learning they received during their formative years.
