What Parents Say
1st Presbyterian Church of Brunswick is a welcoming religious community that has served the Troy area since 1809. Parents and members consistently praise the friendly atmosphere, quality preaching, music, and various ministries including children's programs. The congregation of approximately 400 worshipers offers both traditional and contemporary services.
We moved back to the area in 2018 and started attending Brunswick. We have been impressed with how friendly and open the people are, the good preaching and the good music. We've felt very welcomed!
Trying not to cause offense, but said with care and toward caution: it is my experience that the church, with a strong AWANA program and similar values, exists in reality like a conservative Baptist Church. It is my experience to have witnessed bad financial decisions based on greed ie, acquiring the property belonging to a single woman and children, the property having been in her family for years. I have seen a pattern of single women with children - at least a half dozen besides myself - harmed upon a divorce, or in one case when the woman was in the wrong and causing harm to her family, the man and their daughters rejected. Over two decades I witnessed many basics of Scriptures (the sheep and the goats, etc; core principles of love, compassion, etc) flipped toward capitalism and American individualism, as opposed to caring for the needy. It is my understanding that things have not recovered since the time of employing 3 pastors full-time, with the youngest falling into an affair with another staff's spouse, due to the difficulties of the leadership system and without healthy support It is my experience that white men of privilege can be and feel very comfortable here, as well as women who connect with this paradigm. It's my experience that If you fit, you'll be very welcome, and If you fit someone's idea of who should be saved (while not a white male), you'll be helped significantly. While at this church, I experienced some incredible, amazing grace - until I didn't, and it belonged solely to my ex, and not my children. That all said, I note these important positives: The church-sponsored daycare, TLC. It's affordable, it's compassionate, and it's an excellent service to local families If you experience awe and wonder, and your spiritual life is enhanced through the arts, there is a strong thread of various arts to honor God and share artistic gifts that happens here, especially for those in the white middle and upper class. But it's my experience that these good gifts are shared well, by kind, good hearted, talented people. I've seen the group value photography (albeit while stealing online images not marked stock photography, for use in worship - yet I'm not sure I've ever seen a church not do this). I've witnessed a value of arts in painting and other visual arts,
The experiences that I have had here ever since I was 8 years old have only been wonderful. I remember them being friendly, I remember loving the services, the breakfasts, the festivals, and the way they treated children like myself at the time. Very welcoming place! I have had only happy memories here.
I've been a member of Brunswick church for about 7 years since I moved to Troy. I've found it a great church, with solid people, preaching and teaching. We try to be a Biblically based church that takes seriously the call to both love God AND to love our neighbor. There are a lot of ways that plays out in the ministries of the church (food pantry, extensive childrens ministries, commitment to missions giving, adult education, etc.). As a bit of history, the church was originally founded in 1809 by the farmers of the area who realized the need for an English speaking church, as opposed to the German speaking Lutheran church down the road. The church continued as a rural congregation of about 30-50 people in worship until the 1960's after which, the church has grown a lot. The church currently serves about 400 worshipers each weekend between the one Thursday and two Sunday services. All in all, I'd recommend Brunswick as a great place to grow in Christ and to serve if you're in the area.
Love this church. I was married in this church 50 years ago as it was the church my husband went to and sang in the choir. I fell in love with the church first time I went with him to service in 1968.
