What Parents Say
The YWCA Child Development Center in Birmingham receives mixed reviews. Most reviewers praise the facility as a safe, clean environment with friendly staff and strong safety protocols. However, some residents report serious concerns about security issues, lack of responsiveness from management, and communication barriers.
The YWCA was ok at the beginning. However, there were many car break ins and broken car windows on the property. Someone also illegally came into my unit overnight while I was sleeping (caught them running out). Prior to that a company I sued in the past was seen touching my cameras that did the fire alarm repairs for the past 10 months. My door was locked which let me know that someone had a key from security to get in. When I brought this to housing and the directors attention, they were more concerned with the lock I placed on my door for protection instead of the issue. They also avoided meeting with me since I wouldn't go to the meeting alone. What made matters worse is the Sargeant of police came by to retreat footage and they told them that footage erased after three months and that they do not work. After I emailed them that they didn't give the police footage and that I was not allowing the employees in who did the fire alarm, I wasn't given a lease nor emailed back concerning the matter.
Hi do not go to this shelter they don't help you with nothing they don't provide support for dv at all they only let dv stay only two weeks that's it and then they send you back out to be on the streets they don't help you with counseling they don't help you find public housing you have to do everything on your own and it's not fair and if you are a woman with no kids they definitely putting you out on the street within two weeks with no questions or concerns they don't have no hard they don't care
The rooms at the YWCA have persistent issues with cleanliness and pest control, specifically with roaches. The situation is not being addressed, with pests found in towels and other personal items. Additionally, some of the staff are unprofessional, dismissive, and unhelpful when issues are brought to their attention. The rooms and bathrooms are also in a state of disrepair, with noticeable damage.
Say they are to help domestic violence survivors. Yet they push you like less than a week to find housing. And when you do, they drag their feet. Also I was assaulted by abuser in Huntsville. Have hpd and hospital proof. But because I didn't think to or wasn't able to call them, they exited me from program. And they are as controlling as most abusers including their kitchen use policy. My granddaughter in school in Birmingham and no outbreak of COVID so why that excuse YWCA uses for keeping kitchen locked?
It was a safe place for me to regain structure & stability. But then, I rent an apt. unit from them. I caught COVID and couldn't pay my rent. And when I tried to continue to pay my rent during COVID, they refused to accept my money. Now I have an eviction on my credit report! After exhausting all efforts to regain stability, I'm back where I started from!! Broke, busted and disgusted with the whole outcome of seeking help through the YWCA! And add insult to injury, they would garnish my pay , taking as much as they want out of my check to pay off the debt. And that too also leaves with no money to regain anything! I wouldn't recommend the YWCA to anyone. You'll come out better staying at a shelter and starting over. I thought that the YWCA was supposed to help!!!
