What Parents Say
Parents praise the YMCA facility for its clean, modern building and caring staff who treat children well. Most reviews are highly positive, though some criticism exists regarding membership policies, staff communication, and facility hour changes.
I cancelled my membership via a paper form and they apparently did not process it or lost the form and the person I spoke to, Michael Defina, implied that I’m a liar and started ghosting me and my husband via email. No professionalism or customer service. Atlanta deserves better than this as the YMCA leadership. They stole about $1200 from my family (I was terrible at checking our credit card statements). He did agree to refund 3 months instead of the full balance but then ghosted us after we said that’s not enough.
My wife and I cancelled our membership a year ago and the Y continued to charge us. We emailed asking how to cancel twice in August. After not receiving a response to either of those messages my wife cancelled in person on 8/14/24. The YMCA continued to charge us for a whole year, we disputed Sep and Oct charges through our credit card and won those disputes. Our life got a lot busier after that and we didn’t continue to check if they were illegitimately charging us. After explaining all of this to them they only credited back 3 months. We are still owed fees for 7 months. The Y says they responded to one of the emails, but we clearly showed it was never received. They had no comment on the other email, they couldn’t find the cancellation form, and had no comment on why they didn’t respond to the credit card disputes. I foolishly hope someone within the YMCA can read this message and escalate an obvious issue. Practically, if you plan on cancelling your membership make sure you receive written confirmation that it was received and cancelled. I also hope the giving.org complaint process can help us get our funds back.
I have a membership through my job for a discounted rate. However unable to use because there is no option available for my minor daughter. I would not mind paying a monthly fee for her separate from my job’s plan but they are saying no. I have to have a family plan which would negate my job sponsored membership. Plus the family plan is for 2 adults and up to 7 children. There is no option just for youth, which sucks if you are a single parent and want to prioritize your health. Not sure how they can consider themselves a nonprofit.
I wish Atlanta had higher standards for leadership but at the well-established nonprofit like the YMCA they are comfy in their jobs and don’t actually care about the community. Be very careful about giving this nonprofit your credit card or bank info. After I cancelled, they continued to charge me for 10 months. After I noticed and reached out, I was met with an attitude and hostility from Michael Defina. There were also apparently other higher-ups CC’ed on our emails who never said a word so they seem to approve how we were treated - essentially YMCA denying I cancelled because they are “still looking” for my cancellation form (somehow that takes a month to open a drawer?). I tried to get the person in charge at the Buckhead location on the phone, Patrick Kirwan, and left a voicemail, even after the front desk person said he was in his office he neglected to answer the phone or ever respond to my voicemail or emails.
Attended my Alumni Christmas celebration and toy donation to families of the YMCA.
