What Parents Say
The YMCA Kalona BASP receives mostly positive reviews praising clean facilities, friendly staff, and good equipment. However, several recent reviews cite management issues including inconsistent policy enforcement, unfriendly interactions with leadership, and restrictions on family access after 6 PM.
Great equipment and lots of it! I've been working with their personal trainer Angie for 3 months and she is amazing! Gymnasium usually available for random pickleball, basketball, etc. And there is a racquetball court available almost all the time. Great place for seniors with gentle classes and opportunities for socialization.
The only issue I have is that people lifting weights will not put the weights back! I guess sign everywhere don’t matter. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The environment is safe and family friendly. It’s never too crowded. I would like too see Boxing lessons or martial arts at this location though.
Most of the staff is great but they have management that loves to go on power trips and will never give an exception for someone who wants to stay late, bring a friend or family member (even if you have the family plan), or use some equipment they have closed off. Any other gym will let you bring a visitor and those gyms also have many more amenities. This gym has no sauna, no pool, and half the time you can’t even use the basketball court.
Apparently only certain people are allowed in this Y according to someone claiming to be the CEO. Not family friendly either. Kids not allowed under supervision after 6. So no adult can work out or do anything after 6 with children. Complete discrimination from someone claiming to be the CEO and is immediately stand off-ish. I use the word discrimination as I have seen countless families after 6 come in all the time. My family has even had doors opened for us from employees that are closing the doors and never said anything till the "CEO" decided to raise her voice at my wife and kids for coming in after 6 all the time with multiple families. The "CEO" could've just been friendly and explained the policy rather than raise her voice and scold my wife and kids for doing what every family does. Update: another family is in at 7:30, spoke with them as they were given permission to play on the gym with parent. Sounds like CEO has a bit of a discrimination problem allowing other families but my own. Update 2: Wife has now been suspended for 30 days of 24/7 access. I was the one who talked back to the ceo not her and now she's getting punished.
I think the community center is a great asset to Kalona. I have concern because I think if you are not playing a game (basketball or volleyball, etc...) you should be wearing a mask.
