What Parents Say
The YMCA GLB Fairfield Family Site receives mixed reviews. Parents praise the welcoming environment, friendly staff, quality swimming instruction, and diverse programming for families. However, several negative experiences involve staff unprofessionalism, inconsistent information provided to members, scheduling limitations, high pricing relative to facility size, and camp supervision concerns.
Whomever allowed a young lady named (Lemonade) to look after a group of children at Camp Oaks this past week should really be ashamed of themselves. My daughter not only had horrible cabin mate's (one of the worst Cabins) but had to sit and listen to Lemonade loose control on Wednesday night bringing her to tears. Out of all her years of camping this was absolutely the worst of all. Many of the kids really needed to be reprimanded but instead it was a complete failure. Camp Oaks is beautiful but the experience with the Fairfield family YMCA was completely unsatisfying.
I love this place for so many reasons (gym, kids club, swimming and etc). My son (ADHD) is able to be himself in a welcoming warm environment. I normally work out while my son is taking swimming lessons. I've been told how much progress he has made in swimming so I left the gym 20 minutes to watch him. When I tell you they taught my kid so much ...they taught him so much. My baby dived in the water and started swimming. All I got to say is watch out Michael Phelps!!
The locker rooms are always out of soap. Wear flipflops. Gym is clean, however I am a swimmer and the hours for lap swimming don't work for me because I work and by the time I get home from my commute swim lessons or swim team etc need the whole pool. I paid extra to use the different locations, however I have the same problem with the Lakewood pool. I am still a member so my family can go. I would totally pay a little extra if they could add the Torrance location more than a couple of times a month. That pool is awesome and on my way home and always has a lane at times that works for me.
I felt the need to comment after reading the one star review of this YMCA. I have been coming to this YMCA for years and I feel that it performs admirably if you want a low-key place to get your exercise in. Yes, the pool is busy in the summertime when the kids are not in school but I have never had a problem getting a lane to swim in (early mornings and lunches are less busy). And the staff has always been accommodating to my needs.
If I could give them a no star I would, the reason is that the one in charge only cares about is the money. All she mentions is the money, money, money that they need. Well, the way she says it is money for her and not really for the YMCA. She gets upset every time I would remind her that the prices that are for members are not no prices for low income people. That is ridiculous that they put them prices so dame high so once they apply the "discount" that they apply it still comes up being high, I mean really high. Then, she states that they need to pay this, they need to pay that, and not just that, her source(income). To me that sounded like all she wanted was peoples money to get paid well. As for this branch this is terrible that they are charging so much for a tiny gym and not much of machines to choose from. Also, there open schedule is terrible so much charge for so little time of having the business open. Not good! I think that the this low income price is not really a low income like they state up front.
