**UPDATE UPDATE** Same day update as the one below... I went into the Y to workout and play ball. Checked the UPDATED schedule. I get there and the gym is closed for a reserved basketball practice..... Yall just out to get me at this point. **UPDATE** I'm not sure if anyone noticed this review or if these changes were in the works already, but either way I appreciate it. I've noticed the gym schedule has been updated appropriately on the website, this has been a huge help! Thank you. I've also recently noticed emails that have been sent for closures (rather than showing up to the building being closed). I'm not sure if that's new, but I appreciate that as well. Updating from 2 to 3 stars for now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pros: Friendly staff, clean environment Cons: Let's begin... 1. Missing essential weightlifting accessories, machines, equipment. There is no deadlift jack for the 2 deadlift racks. The free weights area is smaller than an apartments gym, at times there are 10 people standing so close to each other, that HAS to be a hazard for heavy weights being dropped. The area next to the lockers is 3x as large as the free weights area, why not add mirrors on that wall and move those machines? 2. The schedule is never accurate. I check the gym schedule before I go and started to give up. I show up, and most of the time there's an event that closes the gym with no notice on the schedule. 3. THE HOURS ARE WILD! Sunday from 1pm - 6pm, I understand that this is a religious gym, but that is getting out of control... Also, they do pickleball in the gym from 1pm - 3pm on Sundays, so that means there's 3 hour window for basketball? It goes from 10 people playing pickleball to about 50 people playing basketball at 3pm. Can we not see a supply and demand issue? 4. Why is the pool or the hot tub always closed? If it's a cleanliness thing, I can understand and appreciate that, but otherwise what are we doing here? 5. The price: I use the "Active & Fit" insurance through my provider which allows most gyms to be $28/mo. The Y considers itself a luxury gym so it's $36/mo, that's all fine but I just got a notice they are raising it into the $40+ range? For what? Are you adding more hours? More equipment? Better layout? I'm sure there are more things that I missed, but whoever is running the Y seems to be doing so by the seat of their pants. Can we get a consultant in there or something?
Honestly, everything at this gym is great. The front desk service is excellent, the place is always clean, and they have a wide variety of really solid, useful machines. The only small issue is that they have only two ClimbMills, and that gets frustrating because they’re almost never available. If they added more, the experience would be perfect.
What a great new community center, this has just about everything now, from a swimming pool, hot tub, weight room, basketball courts, rooftop track, spin class and much more. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly. I enjoyed this place so much I got a membership. I am disappointed that my 12 year old cannot use the weight machines even while I am supervising. I would love to see opportunities for middle school aged kids to learn some proper lifting mechanics.
Every time I go to the ymca, I find everyone kind and helpful. The place always looks clean and I love the Sauna! My favorite part of this place is the rooftop, Love the views as I'm getting my steps in. Thank you for being a great part of the community, been going for 27 years! Thanks again for being amazing!
The new YMCA in Salem is just beautiful! I personally love the swimming pool and the workout machine area, but the kids' play area, free weights and rooftop walking track are also great. My experiences with the team have all been so positive. I'm also grateful for the many community events this location has been able to organize and make available to community members.
