What Parents Say
The Decatur YMCA is highly praised as a comprehensive community wellness facility with strong afterschool and camp programs for children. Parents consistently highlight friendly, knowledgeable staff, well-maintained facilities, and diverse programming for all ages. The center is noted as both a reliable childcare option and an important community resource that supports family wellness.
Great facility offering something for all ages from childcare to lap swimming. Staff is very friendly, patient and informative. Pool activities are well scheduled and you can even reserve a lane for swimming laps. Membership is by the month with no contract. Stop by or go on-line to see the full list of offerings. Parking is adequate, but if it’s busy your first workout could be getting to the front door.
The YMCA is meant to be a safe, welcoming place for kids and families, but that was not our experience. As a Black family, we felt our son was under heightened scrutiny (he's only 6!) in ways that were uncomfortable and concerning. There were two incidents, one of which staff acknowledged and apologized for. The second was especially troubling. I was told my son needed supervision in an area while I was sitting right there, yet three white children were in the same space without a parent in sight and were not addressed at all. I was told that I needed to be "in arms reach" of him. Speaking as a previously employed YMCA staff member (in membership services), this was unacceptable, so I reached out to the management TWICE. I was never contacted back... to this day. This leads me to believe that from a training level, corporate needs to get involved asap! Ramsay McWhirter. This inconsistency made it clear that we were being treated differently, and it left us feeling unwelcomed. If you are Black or Brown and considering this Decatur 'family' YMCA, I would strongly urge you to think twice. Go somewhere else because luckily your membership covers a vast majority of metro ATL locations. By contrast, our experience at the East Lake YMCA has been completely different: welcoming, family-centered, and genuinely inclusive. Even with higher membership fees, we won’t be canceling because the environment there truly reflects what a YMCA should be. Thank you, East Lake, for embodying what the YMCA is truly about!
Customer service is great, rules are ridiculous. Pool is never open for anything other than lap swim and classes. Gymnastics might be good for younger kids, but not for older. Will not be registering for anymore classes or summer camps.
Lately, gym has been so packed in addition to the Employee ( with short hair) who acts like a 'trainer' to members needs a MAJOR attitude adjustment. Starting to feel like it's not worth it anymore
My husband and I have been members for years, and There are many reasons why! First of all, it’s a neighborhood place, which we love. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are plenty of classes to choose from, and the teachers are Good at what they do and they obviously enjoy it. The facilities are great. We love the Decatur Y!
