It has prison vibe, the room, halls, inside the room. Small room, which is ok and even had fridge and safe but the "deluxe double" had metal bunk bed which made noise every time you turned, so not much sleep plus super soft matress. Shower was cold,, it is not that they don't clean the bathroom, they do but people staying there leave hair behind as well as don't flush toilets. The sink tap doesn't work in many of them. Expensive for what it is, we forgo one night, didn't get any money back, and found something double price, but double size and own bathroom and breakfast. We stay in hostel all around the world but this is was the worst we ever been to.

This is an excellent place to stay for solo travellers or travellers who do not feel that they need a luxury experience or prefer to travel in a more simple and basic way. Excellent location and very close to a Target for late night convenience shopping. The facilities here are great. There is a water fountain on the ground floor and on the fourth floor. If you book a private room with a semi private bathroom, you will have a nice room and the bathroom facilities are very good. The shared bathrooms can be better or worse and can be busy. I personally really enjoyed my first week long stay here and it felt very safe on my floor . However, during my second, shorter stay, there were many teenage boys on my floor who were behaving very badly with their school on a foreign school trip. It was uncomfortable being in the elevator with them (they were shouting and fighting) and walking to the bathroom with them hanging around. This is why I believe that the safety at the YMCA depends on who is visiting and who is on your floor.

This has been one of the worst places I have ever stayed at. We booked a private room with a private bathroom, but the experience was very disappointing. The shower was terrible, there was no hot water, and we had to use the gym showers instead. There were no hair dryers available, not in the bedroom and not even in the men’s gym changing room. My husband had to dry his hair using a hand dryer. There is absolutely no attention to detail. The room felt depressing, almost like a prison cell, we had to move forniture around to make it look more like a room. The bed was very small, which was especially uncomfortable since my husband is 6’4”. Even something simple, like changing the flooring to carpet or something more pleasant, would make a big difference. I’ve stayed in other hostels before, and none of them have been this bad. If you plan to use the swimming pool, make sure to bring a swim cap, or you won’t be allowed in. Also, bring your own shampoo and conditioner, because there isn’t any provided, not even in the gym. The sauna and steam room were decent but not properly cleaned. The staff clearly have no understanding of customer service. When I went to the front desk to ask for information, the person replied to me as if I were stupid just because I didn’t already know the answer. The only good thing about this place is its location, but even that doesn’t justify the $300 we spent for such poor service.

I recently went on a school trip to NYC and had to stay in this hotel. If one can even call it that. DO NOT STAY IN THIS PLACE. If you are travelling alone, or have the option to stay elsewhere, I urge you to do so. This is the worst accommodation I have ever stayed at for several reasons. 1. The rooms are dirty, small, old, looks like a prison cell. To elaborate, our room had a broken window (glass and blinds) that didn’t open, and was as well rusted and chipping. The air conditioning was FULL of lint and mold as well as the heating underneath. The walls and desk lamps had mysterious brown stains. The wifi is free, however it disconnects you randomly and doesn’t immediately connect, you must do it manually every time you enter the hotel. The first thing I saw when I lifted the blanket was a black hair on my “fresh” sheets. The double beds were so unstable, they could have unhinged and broken any time, any small movement was enough for loud squeaks and instability. Lastly and most importantly, the doors DO NOT LOCK, they have the keycard system just as any other hotel, however it’s useless, anyone can come in the room as they please. 2. The bathrooms. There are 3 toilets and 3 shower stalls for 80 ROOMS. Not only that but they are never cleaned, on the door there was a cleaning worksheet to keep track of all the cleanings and the last had been MONTHS before our stay. Floors are constantly dirty, wet and with hairs. The main door to the bathroom also had a keypad lock system, however it was broken and the door remained open constantly. One of the stalls was completely dark due to a broken lightbulb and a hole that led directly to the tubes and wires beyond the ceiling. In that same stall there was mold in the ceiling and as water condensed on the same moldy ceiling, moldy water droplets would fall on you as you were showering. However the mold wasn’t only specific to this stall. ALL OF THEM had it, on soap dispensers, shower heads, walls, doors, EVERYWHERE. The water coming out of the showers was burning hot, the shower handles and shower supports were broken. To reinforce the uncleanliness of this bathroom, there was a cockroach on the wall for the entire 7 days of our stay, there was pubic hair on the walls, hairs on the drain, dirty sinks, trash, paper all over the place.

I love this place I went there for my first time in NYC on 2021 and I came back in 2025. I love it, the location is impecable, the people it's great, of course you have some days where people could have a bad one and it's okay... But regardless of that it's amazing. You have a pool and a gun to use, sadly I was always so tired and couldn't take advantage of it. The rooms are great always clean, and if there aren't you can ask. I always stayed in private rooms, so I don't know about the shared rooms but I didn't heard any complains. The only thing that makes me put 4 stars instead of 5 it's that the WiFi this 2025 was really bad. I don't know if it was because of how crowded it was or what but I think it's something easy to fix. I will go back either way to this amazing place.
