What Parents Say
Reviews praise Wailuku Hongwanji Preschool as a warm, welcoming community center with strong family programming including a popular preschool and Japanese school. The facility hosts well-attended cultural events like the Obon festival and offers a supportive environment for families and scouting programs. One reviewer criticized the facility for removing trees during monarch butterfly season, resulting in caterpillar deaths.
I've been coming here since I was a little tyke, for summer fun, bon dances, ukulele lessons and recently for funeral services. The resident reverend is very welcoming to all and provided a beautiful service for a family member. From the outside, the temple is as plain as can be, but the inside, more so the altar, is pretty impressive. Below the temple seems to be used as storage. Across the courtyard (where they bon dances are held) is a small event hall with kitchen. Above that were classrooms but I'm not sure if they're still in use.
These people cut down 2 very old and well established Crown Flower trees at the height of the monarch season. This is the plant the monarch butterfly lays her eggs on and the only plant the caterpillars eat before they become beautiful chrysalis' and then emerge as gorgeous butterflies that add so much to nature. They seemed totally oblivious and completely uncaring to the fact that many hundreds of caterpillars died because of them doing this at this time of the year. It is incomprehensible that anyone could do this! Unless you were blind you had to see all the caterpillars that were on the trees and now are dead because of the lack of caring. And a Buddhist Temple of all places that I would have thought to be more aware and caring about life.
Buddhist temple with warm congregation and strong community service orgs. Japanese school and preschool popular. Check out annual obon festival, bake and yard sales. Chow funn booth at county fair is iconic. Good place for families. Great scouting program.
Great to see Obon with all the support from the community. Good food, great people, great dance, great place to be.
I feel the same way as Pat Valerio I couldn't get inside either It is pretty from the outside
