What Parents Say
Thurman E Dorsey Head Start has mixed reviews. Most parents praise it as a great learning environment for preschool-age children, particularly for underprivileged families. However, two detailed negative reviews cite staffing instability, inadequate teacher support for children with special needs, poor administrative responsiveness, and unfair treatment of students.
I’m so feed up with this place from the start until now. When I was enrolling my son I sat in the front waiting for a meeting for almost two hours nobody came to address or help me until I start getting loud. Ever since that me and my child has been treated unfair. My son started with two Mexican teacher who later left I loved both of them I didn’t care about the language my child was enjoying school and loved going I never got any calls they said he was doing good. One day one of them had left leaving the other one alone with no help. Now with both gone they have a older black teacher who can’t handle these four year olds and I have to pick up my son everyday kause my son is doing the same thing the other kids are doing. This school can’t even keep a teacher for my son who has different needs for him to be comfortable. I have never heard of anybody having to pick up a child kause he ran from a teacher. When my son started he didn’t do none of that I have seen kids there do the most I was told by another teacher my child would do what the others was doing. This place was my last choice and I see why. I hate that my son waited so long to go to school and these people tear him down everyday just to satisfy a teacher that need to be with older kids. I do not recommend this place to anyone I gave them a chance and my son can’t even get the proper treatment or be able to learn anything due to different teachers or not being able to be at school. I was lied to they told me they would handle and work with him and I still have to get him everyday.
It appears the social worker I spoke with on-site wasn’t assigned to my son’s age group, and there was a noticeable lack of effort to assist me. To my understanding there are four social workers available on-site. Over the phone, I received instructions to drop off paperwork for scanning and uploading. I specifically inquired about the best time to do so and was assured that any time would work, as any social worker could handle the task. However, upon arrival, I couldn’t remember the name of the person I spoke with. When another social worker was called, she asked if I had an appointment. I explained the instructions I received over the phone. She then asked me to write down my name and phone number, which I did. I reiterated my request for her to submit the paperwork to whomever requested it. She took it. I was following instructions to drop off the paperwork, and it was disheartening that the social worker seemed unwilling to take a moment to determine who needed it. Given that there are four social workers, it seems reasonable to expect some level of assistance. I didn’t request to speak to anyone nor did I have more questions. Just dropping off paperwork. You can generally discern when someone is genuinely willing to help, and I was disappointed that this wasn’t the case with the social worker I encountered. It's even more disappointing that the reviews don't align with the actual office workers I was already hesitant about entrusting them with my nonverbal ASD son, and this first impression was honestly not what I expected. If this reflects the level of care and dedication my son will receive, I would much rather keep him at home.
Awesome place. For under privilege kids to learn.
