What Parents Say
Temple Beth Hillel Nursery School receives overwhelmingly positive feedback from most parents, who praise the welcoming community, excellent teachers and staff, and comprehensive educational programs from preschool through upper elementary. However, one parent reported a significantly negative experience in kindergarten involving their daughter's emotional distress, perceived mishandling of behavioral issues, and communication barriers.
My experience, and that of my daughter, at Beth Hillel kindergarten was terrible. When my daughter first started attending, she came home every day crying and traumatized. Because her mother and I are divorced, I couldn't immediately take her out of there. After two weeks, my daughter couldn't bear it anymore and ended up hitting a teacher. The kindergarten's reaction was disproportionate—they expelled her for five months and agreed to take her back only with ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) support. I believe that such support should be provided to help the teachers. It's important to note that my daughter's mother works at this kindergarten. Despite my efforts to assist my daughter and remove her from this place, I faced significant challenges. I filed a lawsuit, but the Los Angeles court tends to favor women over men.Part of my job as a musician involves touring worldwide, and many times, my daughter's mother prevented me from having phone calls with her. I tried asking the teachers at this kindergarten for phone calls with my daughter, but they refused, even though it wouldn't have been disruptive since the ABA therapist could have facilitated the call without disturbing the class.Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this school was so strict with its regulations that many parents simply withdrew their children. Ultimately, they had to close their first-grade classes.I have many more stories about this awful school, and I strongly warn against sending your children there.
Temple Beth Hillel is a jewel of a synagogue! The Rabbi’s are very wise and warm. The religious schools are excellent! My children went to the ECE, Day School, and Religion school are run by excellent people and my kids learned a lot! The Bat Mitzvah training is thorough and the service my daughter’s had were so special and personal. A high light of my life! I would highly recommend you checking out the programs. I think you will be happily surprised! Kenny Tashman
We moved our daughter to the upper elementary school at the last minute. Now, when her school year is about to be completed I can tell you it was THE BEST decision we could have made. Well worth being members at two temples as we now have a larger, very welcoming, community for our family. Even though our son attends religious school at our other temple this community supported his Mitzvah project too. We were initially concerned that kids who had been together since kindergarten would find a new student challenging but it was completely the opposite -- she has made great new friends this year! Our daughter has grown tremendously socially, emotionally and academically! I can't say enough positive things about this school!!!
One always thinks their Temple is the best, but last weekend when Dr. Ruth Calderon spoke there were over 250 people form other local temples and I could not believe all the positive comments about Temple Beth Hillel I received as I worked as a greeter. Received lots of unsolicited comments ranging from the friendliness of the guard when they drove up, to the new elevator, to the way everyone greeted them. Come visit Temple Beth Hillel for the many things we offer, from community, social action, prayer, and our many educational programs ranging from preschool to adult education.
As a member of TBH for more than 20 years, I am grateful for its welcoming community, warmth, and the many programs offered to its constituents, led by our amazing rabbis. I am most appreciative of its schools, including the elementary school, religious school, and early childhood education. The teachers and staff are second to none.
