As a concerned parent and community member, I feel it’s important to shed light on several serious issues within the Ballard County School system that are affecting our children’s wellbeing and education. First and foremost, the quality and quantity of school meals are deeply concerning. Multiple students, including my own, have reported being served expired milk—some more than two weeks past the date. Over the past three weeks, I’ve personally verified this with at least eight different students. When one student tried to bring the issue to the attention of cafeteria staff, he was met not with concern, but with hostility. It’s heartbreaking to know that our children—who rely on these meals to get through the school day—are being served food that isn’t even safe, let alone nutritious. Our students deserve adequate, fresh, and wholesome meals, especially considering the taxes we pay to support this district. Beyond the cafeteria, the learning environment itself has become increasingly disappointing. At the middle school level, the leadership is lacking professionalism and respect. The principal has developed a reputation for being rude and confrontational, often choosing to yell at students rather than engage with them constructively. This creates a hostile atmosphere that discourages growth, learning, and respect. While there are a handful of dedicated and caring teachers who go above and beyond, the majority seem disengaged. Far too often, students are told to “figure it out” on their Chromebooks instead of being actively taught. This overreliance on technology—initially introduced during COVID—has evolved into what feels like lazy teaching practices rather than a tool to enhance learning. Families are even expected to pay annual fees for these devices, which were originally provided as school-issued tools. It’s no surprise that Ballard County Schools are losing students to neighboring districts like Heath and McCracken County—districts that appear to value quality education and student welfare. Unless major improvements are made in leadership, meal programs, and classroom engagement, more families may feel compelled to make the same decision. Our children deserve better—from what they eat to how they’re educated. It’s time for Ballard County Schools to take accountability and make the necessary changes to truly serve the students and families who support them.
I've found that the school's communication with parents is often lacking, leaving parents out of the loop on important matters. Additionally, there seems to be a shortage of accommodations for students with special needs, which can hinder their learning experience. It's disappointing to see these issues in an educational environment. The Principal is the heart of school management and with cancelling appointments and not giving proper communication, Mr. Sheffer seems to be ill fitting.
Very few teachers there are nice. Bob Wilson is making me switch back to McCracken, because I missed all week WITH A DOCTORS NOTE due to being sick. This school will turn on you in a heart beat. Plus they have roaches and they have poor excuses as bus drivers. No one would do anything about this one bus driver that wrecked into a ditch 4 times and failed to report it
Ballard County School System is a small public school system in far Western Kentucky. Small classrooms where teachers are able to work with the students collectively and individually to meet their education needs. Give Ballard County, KY. and her school system a try! You'll be glad that you did. Go Bombers!
They are not accommodating at all for special needs children. Communication is nearly nonexistent. The principal at the elementary school is a bully and has no business being in charge of these children.
