What Parents Say
Star of Hope is a shelter and transitional housing facility in Houston offering comprehensive support services including daycare, meals, medical care, and job training programs. Reviews are polarized, with strong praise from those who engage with the program's structure and criticism from residents regarding rule enforcement, staff empathy, and restrictions on employment.
It's pretty good, but there are numerous things that could be far better than they are. Overall, you get out of it what you put into it. If you're looking for things to complain about, you'll find them. I have my reservations about some of the staff and the way rules are enforced, BUT it's also far better than being on the street anywhere. Same thing with the food. It could be way better on many days, BUT it's three hot meals a day you don't have to beg money from strangers for or go through trash cans to find. The rules are often arbitrary and enforced to varying degrees and some of the staff tend to forget the residents aren't inmates, but there are also some very caring staff who really are there for the right reasons and whose presence helps. There's bad to be had here, but there's also a great deal of good if you care to look for it.
Star of hope has rules in order to keep people safe, insure residents stay is helpful in propelling the resident into a more stable life when they leave, thats the point. Lights out at 9pm, attend a class 5 days a week, apply for jobs, save money, drug detox if needed ,dont be unruly. Thats it. They give you a roof, meals, info, clothing, church, and alot more. Iv seen it help all those who truly wanted the help. But some people think they intitled to the help without following the rules. Its the rules that keep people safe while they are putting their lives back together.
DONORS BEWARE!!! UPDATE: Same old same old. After 2 years, I recently read current reviews to see if this faculty has changed for the better as I have earnestly prayed. Sadly, some of the security are still belittling the residents, some of the workers are not portraying the love Christ, and they are not serving nutritious meals consistently. I still say that God has used some people as a light to the homeless through Star of Hope. I have even had opportunities to donate as well, BUT NEVER AGAIN UNTIL SOME MAJOR CHANGES OCCUR IN THE BEHAVIOR OF MANY OF THE STAFF MEMBERS AND SECURITY WORKERS! As a resident from 8/20/21-10/24/21, MY HOPE IN STAR OF HOPE IS SHATTERED, AND THEY HAVE PERPETUATED OUR FAMILY'S HOMELESS STATE during the holiday time. My 7 children and I endured many traumatic dehumanizing experiences and unloving ways at the hands of the staff and security team at Star of Hope. The housing help was never open when I went to obtain permanent housing assistance, and our family was kicked out over my denial to sign a contract my case manager knew I couldn't keep. I don't believe God is pleased with the way me and other residents were treated (I am not the only case). It is out of concern, not anger, that I write this review, and I would caution you about donating to this organization because it is not as good on the inside as it appears on the outside. Despite our plight, we can still smile because God has promised He will never leave us nor forsake us. God has heard the cry of the residents (current and past), and He will fight for us all. Thanks for reading this post.
This is an excellent shelter for single women and/or women with families who are in transition and need a comfortable and welcoming place to stay. It is a very secure new facility and a Christian shelter offering case management, medical clinic, clothing room, daycare, teen program, chapel services and various educational, biblical, job readiness and developmental programs to fit your needs. The staff are absolutely wonderful and very compassionate. As a social services professional finding myself in transition, Star of Hope has truly been a blessing to me and I am very grateful.
This is my second time back from being incarcerated and there’s some staff and better security they only tolerate hard working people not allowing this to be a hotel ,motel, etc and I understand the frustration because when I got here I slept on a rock at first to get my spot in and out star of isn’t my destination moving somewhere safe is because when I came here some people took me the wrong way and wanted me to owe them money that’s not my cup of tea weird ppl hang around when they staff can barely handle negative people like these old and young adults need to grow up and stop with the nonsense it’s everyday with the same shenanigans happening and it’s not fair to the ones that’s hungry for this elevation I’m of coming to this place when all they do is help and they staff and security get disrespected by some beggers that need a place to lay they because you missed your payments on rent because god not playing with us at end of the day tired of seeing the struggle when all I dream of is a better life style because it’s due everyday
