What Parents Say
Somerset County YMCA Somerville Early Education Center receives mixed reviews with an average rating of 3.6/5. Parents praise the staff, swimming programs, and community engagement, but cite concerns about facility maintenance, crowding during peak hours, and administrative policies.
The place is a little old but has everything you need. 25 meter pool, 3 1/2 to 9 feet deep, adult and children locker rooms, gymnasium and gymnastics
Pool schedule for lap swim is impossible to work with if you have a normal work schedule. Gym is littered with groups of people crowding equipment and loitering, staff does nothing to address this issue. A staff member was very rude to us during check in one day, was screaming down the stairway at us. After numerous unpleasant experiences, we’ve decided to cancel our family subscription. During the cancel attempt, we were told we need to submit a paper form with 30 days notice to cancel the service. This makes absolutely no sense, if we can sign on with a couple clicks online, we should be able to cancel with such ease too. Oh and by the way, you’re paying $100+ for this service for a pool you can never use, an unmanaged gym, staff members with power trips, and group classes that lack time slots. There was a higher expectation for the YMCA due to their history of community engagement and family resources. But these beliefs feel no longer expressed at this location.
Ive been going for almost 2 years. Mainly use the weight room and I don’t need a lot, and it has all the basics. I’m coming from Lifetime prior to this and it’s not comparable, but neither is the price point. I have my family of 4 and my mother on my plan for a hundred less than just me at lifetime. Doesn’t have the bells and whistles but has enough equipment to keep myself in every bit as good shape as other places. After school hours (3-5) can be a bit like the Wild West. Random duels, overcrowded at times, and occasionally some tumbleweed blowing around. All staff I’ve interacted with are friendly and polite. I have my daughter in the gymnastics program, which has been good. You can also use the membership to sign in at other Ys, which is super convenient when traveling. Overall represents value for money.
Great staff. Despite in the middle of renovations, the place still hummed along nicely. Pool was great, locker rooms were clean.
Last week I went to play basketball with some friends and the basketball courts were horrible. There were a ton of dead spots and my buddies and I were sliding all over the place. It was a horrible sports experience. The courts weren’t even waxed and this caused for all of us to be falling and slipping left and right. Apart from the basketball court the staff was actually amazing, I was greeted by the front staff Kayla and Jackie and had a great conversation. Later as my buddies and I were playing, Jamie came over to check on how we were doing because it the first time we were here. The staff was the sweetest but its safe to say my buddies and I wont be coming back.
