The facility is nice and the teachers care and try. My daughter loves her teachers and they always seem happy to see her whether on the clock or bumping into them at TJs. They don't get out to grant park much any more, but they will have experiences for the kids visit occasionally. I get the feeling of rating a daycare "one star" in the context of how great it felt like it was before, but the complaints in the other bad review are pretty small compared to what I've heard around other childcare facilities in Portland.
I’m sharing this in the hope that it helps other families make informed decisions. In my experience, things have changed significantly at Small Wonders over the past year. The administration no longer seems as connected to the children and families as they once were, and recent decisions suggest a shift toward short-term priorities. Several parents, including myself, experienced unexpected changes to previously agreed-upon schedules, sometimes with little notice. This put families in difficult positions—having to either accept increased days (and costs) or risk being without care on short notice. There was also a concerning safety incident where a child managed to leave the classroom and make it outside. To my knowledge, this was not communicated to all families, which raises questions about transparency and communication regarding safety issues. Staff turnover has been high. By the time we left, only one of the original teachers remained. Some staff left voluntarily, reportedly due to dissatisfaction with how they were treated, while others were dismissed under unclear circumstances. We did have many positive experiences in the past, and there are dedicated individuals working there. Unfortunately, it seems that the supportive environment we once valued is no longer the same.
