What Parents Say
Russell Cooperative Preschool receives universal praise from parents who highlight its nurturing environment, experienced teachers, and nature-focused curriculum. Parents consistently describe it as a special community that supports children's emotional development and imagination through outdoor play, homemade snacks, and gentle teaching practices.
I currently have one child at Russell and a kindergartener who went there for three years. We love the school and can't praise the teachers enough. It's more than just a school, its a instant village for those who may live far away from their extended family like we do. They now offer an extended day program, and I walk my son from kindergarten to Russell twice a week to attend that program with his sister. My daughter often tells me she wants to live at school, and I can't blame her since the location is also beautiful with light-filled classrooms, plenty of outdoor play space, and a pollinator garden with a mature apple tree that gave us bushels of apples this year for applesauce snack day at preschool and pies at home. It's also right in the heart of Watertown Square across the street from the Watertown Free Public Library and behind the shopping area with Tresca's, CVS, The Armenian Museum of America, Not Your Average Joe's, and Bar'Cino. That means we have plenty to do right there when we get out of school, and can run errands on the walk home. Highly recommend touring Russell or attending a Visit Day if you live in the area and have a child between the ages of 2-4. They take kids as young as 2.9 and will do mid-year enrollments if space allows.
We have had a wonderful experience with both our kids at this preschool. Such a good environment to socialize children in. Lots of outdoor time and free form play. Great teachers. Can’t say enough good things. One of the last cooperatives in the state. Such a gem.
We love Russell, and think you should check it out. My son has gone to the Russell Cooperative Preschool for a year and a half at this point. It is the most wonderful preschool imaginable. They have awesome snacks, just enough structure to support kids while encouraging imagination, and a beautiful focus on nature: the kids play outside almost every day. We also adore the the teachers (great student/teacher ratio, long tenures, and are very engaged). In summary, this is a magical preschool.
Russell has been a wonderful experience for my son. While we were initially anxious about his first school experience outside of a home setting, the school philosophy and the experienced teachers helped him transition to school in an incredible way. He wants to go to school and is engaged and learning and having fun every day! He has made friends, bonded with his teachers, welcomed new routines and concepts and comes home excited about his day. From the moment of our first visit, we knew that Russell was a unique pre-school and we have found that to be true in every way. The space and the style of teaching is gentle, insightful and calm with a wonderful focus on the natural world. We feel so lucky that we found Russell and are grateful for the positive impact it has had on our entire family!
We love love love this Preschool. My son is in his 3rd year here & off to the kindergarten in the fall 😭 We will miss so many things about this school: from the warmth & kindness of the delightful teachers to the aromas of the delicious homemade snacks wafting through the hall when we drop him off in the morning. The classrooms are beautiful & calming to be in & the outdoor space is vast & perfect for running! We have made so many life long friendships & our hearts will always have a small place just for Russell ❤️
