What Parents Say
Positive Beginnings receives mostly high praise from parents who report happy, well-cared-for children and professional, attentive staff. However, two negative reviews raise serious concerns about inadequate support for children with autism spectrum disorder and hygiene issues including lice and bedbugs.
If your child is on the autism spectrum, be very cautious about sending them to this school. My son, who has autism, has faced significant challenges here, and instead of supporting him and guiding us as parents, the school has only made things harder. Rather than offering real assistance for his needs, they take pictures of him when he has self-inflicted wounds and report them to ACS, instead of working with us to find solutions. As parents, we are still learning how to navigate this, and instead of being a source of support, the school acts as if they are policing us. Another major issue is their inconsistent approach to food. They have sent back the snacks I pack for my son, claiming they aren’t healthy or don’t meet their policies, but then they fail to provide an alternative. Meanwhile, I have personally seen other unhealthy snacks like Takis being allowed, which makes no sense. The biggest problem, however, is that this school simply is not equipped to handle children with autism or special needs. They push these kids out rather than making an effort to help them succeed. I have seen firsthand that they lack the proper training and qualifications to provide the necessary support. Instead of guiding and educating parents like us, they seem more focused on removing responsibility from themselves. As parents of a child with autism, this experience has been frustrating and heartbreaking. If you have a child with special needs, think twice before enrolling them here. The lack of understanding and real support may do more harm than good.
My child’s ABA therapist highly recommended Positive Beginnings when we moved from College Point to Middle Village in 2006. He even helped me enroll my son into the aforementioned school. And they quickly took my child in! My mother told me that Positive Beginnings were hard get in. My brother, who was one year older than my son, didn’t get in. My son LOVED his teachers and the school itself. I still have all of his notebooks, artwork, paperwork, photos taken back then and even his pre-school graduation cap and gown. Conclusively writings, I HIGHLY recommend Positive Beginnings. Be sure to pay attention to enrollment deadlines and good luck!
My son attends this school and he is very happy here. They are very friendly, and are very attentive to the kids. They work well with my son, and is helpful with the steps to progress. I would refer this place to family and friends.
