What Parents Say
Oglethorpe Children's Academy has received mixed reviews. Most parents praise the facility for being clean, safe, caring, and having friendly staff with good communication. However, serious concerns have been raised about discriminatory treatment toward children with developmental needs and disabilities like autism and speech disorders.
All 3 of my children have attended OCA since they opened in 2006, and we love it! My two oldest were there through Pre-K, and now my youngest is in the toddler room. I strongly recommend OCA!
This school has a prejudice towards certain children with extra needs (like autism and a rare speech condition). After confirming that a child could attend- changed their mind the day school started. They will use a child’s behavior at 3 years old against them when they get years older. They told a boy in front of his parents that he couldn’t attend because of his autism and that he wouldn’t be able to handle after school (making him cry). Unacceptable behavior from a learning institution where children should feel safe. The child is now in a loving and caring school that understands all children are accepted. He is now thriving. I will tell anyone as everyone about this experience and hope it doesn’t happen to others
I’ve never been one to do this, but it needs to be said for my son!!! Friday afternoon (9th) Oglethorpe Children’s Academy told me both Isabella & Zech could start attendance last Mon(16th) that they had room for both Bella (2yr class) & Zech(after school/school breaks). I talked to them again the same Friday evening to confirm both were attending. Bella & Zech were excited to meet new friends. Mon morning (16th) they informed me that they did not in fact have room for Zech. They asked me how he was now, his behavior. They said when he was enrolled in the 3yr class that all he did was yell. I simply just told her he was waiting to get tested for Autism- mind you-none of their business. At 3yrs old Zech took speech at Oglethorpe Children’s Academy. At 3yrs old Zech had an IEP at Children’s Academy. At 3yrs old Zech was diagnosed,by his speech Therapist, with Apraxia, a rare speech impediment that most children diagnosed with it have autism and yell as a means to communicate because it affects the cognitive abilities to be able to say what they’re thinking. The lady informed me because of this & how he was at 3, he could not attend. They didn’t have room for him. She said the after school kids get very rowdy & he wouldn’t be able to handle it, that he could not attend. She said all this in front of Zechariah!!! I looked at him and his eyes were watering. I told Stephanie, how I did NOT appreciate her saying all this in front of Zech & making him feel like something is wrong with him. I looked at Zech & I told him, “There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with you.” I told her kids learn, act, & are all different & just because they don’t know how to handle such, DOES NOT mean something is wrong with my son, nor should he be treated & labeled as just “a bad kid”. My children WILL NEVER step foot in their doors!!! They will NEVER receive another dime from me!!! They should be SHUT DOWN. Very unprofessional, very disqualified, very distasteful. I WOULD NOT SEND MY CAT THERE. I’m not the 1st family (nor the last I’m sure) this has happened to. There’s another family that lives in Oglethorpe & like me, drive all the way out to Kiddieland Childcare in Oconee rather than send their babies to Oglethorpe Children’s Academy!!! I have already & will continue to tell EVERYONE my experience with OCA!!! I know some of you have family that do & have worked there, but I’m not sorry for speaking up & out for Zechariah!!! If I don’t who will?!!!
My daughter went there part time and for a little while.I was so happy with how it was there.I worked in childcare before & I had some worries of leaving a kid in one that I did not work at , but they gained my trust 100%. From the smallest scratch , they made it a point to write a boo boo report too , which I personally thought was incredible .
What a wonderful, caring, clean, safe place for our babies and grand babies to be able to go for quality care! They are truly a blessing to our community!!
