What Parents Say
Northstar Child Development Center has extremely polarized reviews. Two parents praised the Christian curriculum, sign language instruction, clean facility, and staff quality. However, three parents reported serious concerns including child abuse incidents, poor director communication, frequent unannounced closures, lack of staffing, and delayed incident reporting.
This school lacks the most basic communication. Jennifer, the director, simply can not do her job effectively. She continuously fails to adequately staff the facility with people who are safe to work with children. They rarely answer the phone. My family has 2 active DSS cases, one of which we were never alerted to until DSS started digging. Our 3 year old was abused by a teacher in her classroom. They had several last minute closings and actually shut down once a week per class due to a lack of staffing. How are parents to work and maintain their jobs this way? Often times upon walking into the building, the area where they keep the children smells like nursing home due to them not keeping the facility clean. Several of the teachers there are very kind and patient and deserve a better place of employment.
I enjoyed the teachers and that's why they get a 1 star. The director is not equipped to handle the responsibility of being a director. We communicated with her before we even relocated here, so I thought it would be a great fit. This is what happened: 1) No communication- didn't return phone calls 2) We asked several times for the code to online system where you communicate with teachers and get info regarding openings/closings and never received access 3) My son came home with scratches and marks and never received incident reports 4) I didn't know my child was going on field trips and riding busbbecause we never received access to system 5) I just always felt a high level of anxiety when I dropped them off 6) When we came for orientation, the teacher we met that day was not the same teacher he had the first day and we couldn't really speak with her because you could only drop and pick kids up from their class on Wednesdays. It was awful!!! Thank God I was able to find other spots for my children. They only went there for a couple of weeks. I know sometimes as parents it is difficult to find great child care, but do not settle!!! This place is not worth the money!!
If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I’m honestly not even sure how this daycare is still open and running with the number of DSS/OHAN cases they have open. I currently have two cases open, one for each of my children due to Northstar hiring individuals who have no business working with children. My daughter was abused by a staff member and my son had fallen out of a stroller due to not being strapped in properly. I never received any documentation for either incident until an entire month later and that was only because I asked for it. The daycare is poorly ran and extremely understaffed. Jennifer, the “director” has absolutely no business in her position. She is not capable of running a facility of that capacity. Her communication skills are poor and she never has the answer to anything. On multiple occasions the daycare has had to “close or shut down” due to gas leaks, staff issues and illnesses. There is ALWAYS something going on with this place. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE SENDING YOUR CHILDREN HERE.
We love Northstar and so does our son. We toured other daycares in the area and felt uncomfortable even considering leaving our baby with any of them. Walking into Northstar is a completely different experience. We love that the curriculum is Christian based and that sign language is taught early on-allowing us to better communicate with out little one. We are grateful for Northstar and their staff!
I have enjoyed Northstar for my son. Great staff and a nice clean building. I like the app they use to communicate. My son is only a few months old and seems to enjoy being “at school”.
