What Parents Say
Northern Manhattan Learning Center for Children & Family HS receives overwhelmingly positive reviews, with parents praising the caring staff, safe environment, and strong academic and social development for their children. However, one detailed negative review raises serious concerns about the toddler classroom, citing safety issues, inappropriate expectations, poor hygiene, and staff conduct.
I cannot recommend this school for children under three. The teacher for the two-year-old class—and the surrounding staff—lack the experience, competence, patience, and understanding needed to care for young children. My two-year-old was expected to write letters of her name while still learning to talk and hold a crayon—an unrealistic and inappropriate expectation. Safety and supervision are major concerns. My daughter came home with a scratch on her forehead during her first week, and staff could not explain it. High-energy behavior was met with a suggestion for a weighted vest instead of age-appropriate activities. Belongings were often lost or misplaced, and communication was unprofessional. The environment is unacceptable: the building is old, poorly maintained, and I observed roaches in areas accessible to children. Within weeks, my daughter contracted conjunctivitis, which she had never had before. It is critical to know the teacher’s beliefs. The only teacher for two-year-olds is an extreme Christian who has publicly expressed discriminatory views against the LGBTQ+ community and other religions on social media. Children deserve a safe, inclusive, nurturing environment—not one where personal prejudice may be imposed. The only consistently caring staff were the social workers and the teacher’s assistant. My daughter attended from September to early November before we withdrew her. Families should strongly consider other schools or caregivers to ensure safety and proper care.

Excellent program
I am the founding Director of this program and SO proud to see what it has evolved to! We opened in 2000 with just 30 Head Start spaces and now the program serves so many more. Thank you to all of the staff that work at the various locations and for serving the children and families in the community everyday!!!
