What Parents Say
Northeast Community Child Development Center in Portland receives consistently high praise from parents. The center is recognized for its experienced and caring staff, play-based curriculum emphasizing social-emotional growth, extended operating hours, and large secure outdoor courtyard. Parents particularly value the cooperative model that encourages parent involvement and the inclusive, community-oriented environment.
Our child attends NECCDC and the school exceeds expectations across the board - the lead teachers are dedicated, experienced, long-term teachers. All the staff are incredible and know how to work well with all the kids' needs and abilities. The teachers and staff foster an inclusive child-first environment. They emphasize social and emotional growth, community, play, art, cooking, and fun projects for the kids. The spaces are high-quality and perfect sizes for the two class sizes of different ages. The outdoor courtyard where the kids play is a really amazing facility that is unique to this school. I am SO happy we found NECCDC - it feels like the best of all the really high quality play-based childcare options in this area. Most importantly, our child has thrived here. In just a few short months his language has exploded, and we've seen a noticeable difference in his social and emotional learning and growth! Can't say enough good things!
We have been sending our twin toddlers here for the last year and we are so glad we found this daycare. Their hours are unusually long, the price is great, and the teachers are so loving and caring. Ben, the current director, is a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher and leader. He puts so much work into this daycare and cares so much about all of the littles. The school is in a closed wing of a Presbyterian Church: it's spacious, private, and even has a huge outdoor play area, so the kids get to go outside without ever being outside a secure area. One of my favorite things about NCCDC is that they let parents volunteer at the school for all kinds of tasks, from buying snacks to cleaning the play areas to sitting on the school board and working with the director. Coming from a daycare that wouldn't let us past the front gate of the facility, it's a blessing to be able to see how things work during a day and have the opportunity to lend a hand. It's really a community daycare and we're lucky to be here.
We’ve been at NCCDC for about 14 months and have had a great experience. Our child started in the toddler room and recently graduated into the preschool room. We’ve appreciated the generous hours of operations (7:30-5:30), warm staff, and small community feel. Our child runs into school excitedly each day, which is so reassuring as a parent. She is constantly surprising us with new skills, concepts, and information that she learned during the day. The school was helpful and supportive with potty training, and they’ve been highly accommodating of our dietary restrictions. We’ve also felt valued and respected as an LGBTQ family. Highly recommend this facility!
We have two boys at NCCDC in the toddler and pre-school room. It’s been great for our family. The director is kind, friendly and accessible. The teachers have a lot of experience and get to know your kids really well. The space is in a church with a huge open courtyard for outdoor play everyday. They have a monthly and daily theme and read/do art projects related to the theme everyday. The other nice thing is that it is a coop so parents can be involved with school decisions.
Both our sons currently attend NCCDC and we are very happy with their experience so far! The co-op nature of the school allows parents to observe their children in this enriching environment and their skillful teachers who nurture and guide them daily. Nicole, the current director, has been with the school for over a decade, having worked her way up from an aide to a lead teacher and now director. She is genuinely invested in the school and community of families. The outdoor space is huge and allows kids to play outside every day, rain or shine. So glad we still have time here to watch our boys grow in such a rich and inclusive environment!
