Our daughter started her enrollment at MCCS at NU in August 2024 in the Early Childhood Program. In that time, her teachers have supported our child along her own individual developmental path, with the utmost care and empathy. Our daughter's learning experiences are active, contextual with plenty of opportunity for her input and interests to assert themselves. Strengths are encouraged, while areas for growth receive patient scaffolding and support from the teaching team. Her teachers model their own authentic and deep commitments to learning, their students, and engagement with the world. The Mills campus offers a pluralistic and welcoming environment; our family's values and identities have been met with care and curiosity by both faculty and other community members. We are so grateful to be at the Mills College Children's School at Northeastern University.
As a high school educator that works with students facing learning and behavioral challenges, I can say that Mills has built a solid academic foundation for my children to be able to succeed. The reason for this is that Mills focuses on the socio-emotional development of students so that they can access their thinking brain to engage in curiosity and learning. I feel so lucky that my kids are able to attend here. I highly recommend visiting the school. It's a beautiful campus and a diverse community of committed educators and families.
My child is enrolled in their second year at Mills and I can’t believe how lucky we are to have found a school that is inclusive, safe, community-oriented and committed to supporting the whole child. When we applied, Mills was the only school that could guarantee my child would be safe as a Black, non-binary human. Families are welcome to be present and encouraged to participate in daily classroom activities, projects and units. Each Friday, there is a coffee circle to promote community between parents and I look forward to it each week. Teachers and administrators are responsive to our needs and any questions we have. I have been an educator for almost 20 years and I knew my child wouldn’t thrive in a large class size with the typical rank and file/ militaristic way in which children and adults have to be to be on pace with lessons. Mills is not that and it’s beautiful. You’ll find: small class sizes, children playing (the best!!) teachers who are highly valued and able to be flexible to provide deep learning while responding to the needs of children. There is an active culture of engaging for critical thinking to dismantle systems of oppression. Mills is a gem. I know my child is loved for who they are and they are safe to just “be”. Due to this, my child feels safe to take academic and social risks that she wouldn’t have before entering. “I love school”, “I love my friends”, “I can’t wait for ____” are regular statements in our household. How lucky are we?!
Hidden gem private school. Outstanding, graduate level teachers and super supportive community. Part of Northeastern University. Our daughter, now grade 1, has been incredibly happy there.
