Leaving this review because I am disgusted by some of the absolutely false reviews I’m reading here. It’s called a Jewish community center, since it is under the UJA umbrella, but this place is both managed/directed by and employs people of all faiths and races. The members are also mixed. It’s a safe haven for everyone and has a dedicated cleaning crew that are always cleaning. The safety of each and every member is their top priority. There are newer, more luxurious gyms out there, but I stay here because this place is the answer to all the hatred and racism that exists in this crazy world. The only negative is there is no towel service and the gym is a bit small (and some machines are old). But everything works and for the membership fee you likely won’t find anything close to all that MIYJCC has to offer.
I joined a year ago for the pool and I thoroughly enjoy the warm water (which makes it easier to get motivated to swim during the winter months), as well as the super clean locker rooms and showers. But what I love best is how warm and welcoming the staff is -- when I pop in, they know me by name and always take the time to say hello and ask how I'm doing. When I call, they are super helpful. They just seem very attuned to their clients, which has not been my experience at other fitness centers. I don't take advantage of many of their programs, but am impressed by how much they offer, and I also love that they give back to the community through their food pantry, coat drive and other initiatives. Highly recommend!
Membership office ladies were very rude and dismissive. I went with a friend interested in joining the gym. We were excited until our brief interaction with these 3 ladies; wish I got their names. They rolled their eyes, scoffed, one told me she had so much paperwork that she wouldn’t even look at it till tomorrow (which I was fine with). They put no effort into providing information. Either they did not want to work on a Sunday afternoon (which any one them could have said to please email or come back another day) or I couldn’t help but wonder if they were discriminating because I am Asian. I told my friend I rather not join this gym and walked out.
Customer service is terrible. Had a question about a refund regarding my kids swim classes, spoke with Marcy Rosenbaum who works at membership services and was rudely cut off by her mid sentence. Couldn’t even explain further until I talked back to her and directly stated how rude she was to me. Very unwelcoming and off putting. She ended up apologizing but the damage had already been done. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person that has experienced this. I just signed up this month during their open house promo and I’m regretting this sign up (locked in for a year).
