What Parents Say
Parents praise the Mahaska County YMCA's childcare program for its clean facility, friendly and attentive staff, and convenient service that allows parents to work out while children are supervised. The center offers swimming lessons, various kids' activities, and flexible hours starting at 5 AM on weekdays. Parents appreciate the affordable pricing and willingness to work with families on payment.
Plenty of activities going on here and normally a good amount of people about. Never feels deserted, that's for sure. The volleyball league they host is fun and brings in a good number of teams. The gym is pretty well stocked and many people choose it over other places.
It's a small and older Y. Nothing really fancy and things are dated, but they do a good job of keeping it clean and making the best out of what they have. Been here several times for swim meets and their staff are always nice.
FYI. If you send your child to their day care center, THEY ONLY RETURN DEPOSITS IF REQUESTED. Apparently, this is some sketchy documentation in their handbook. Something to think about. And remember!!- if you choose to send your child to their establishment. I guess I just assumed our last invoice deducted the deposit and it obviously didn't. I was contacted two months ago (our daughter attended in 2014) about a substantial deposit we had paid. *I still haven't received it, by the way. I wasn't happy with the day care. The teachers were poorly educated and struggled to handle children that would cry when they wanted their parents during drop offs. The YMCA probably pays them minimum wage-which is why they cannot get good help. I had just assumed it would be similar to Kids' Corner (my older child attended long ago) it is definitely not, in any way, similar to the way Kids' Corner used to be. Most of the providers back then were either older, retired grandmothers (who were wonderful with the children) or college students attending William Penn to become future educators. It's almost offensive to keep the name "Kids' Corner". Our daughter stayed there for less than six months.
Love their exercise equipment and work out rooms. My 14 year old son and I work out together at the YMCA. I was able to loose 147 pounds in 2 years by walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes 4 or 5 days a week.
I do wish that they offered daycare on the weekends but I've had nothing but good experiences wonderful friendly faces very clean the daycare staff are just wonderful my kids love to go plus how many places will watch your kids for 2 hours so you can work out 😊
