What Parents Say
This appears to be a high school, not a daycare center. Reviews praise the strong arts programs, dedicated teachers, and welcoming community. Students highlight quality academics, AP courses, and opportunities in visual arts, music, and theater.
As the parent of a Senior, I am more and more impressed with the school all the time. The Visual Art show is phenomenal and the talent across the 5 different Studios shows the dedication and talent of the teachers. The school is big enough for the kids to find friends and interests whether in sports, clubs or academics; yet small enough that the teachers and administrators get to know their students well. They have a strong selection of AP courses and it isn’t unusual to hear music in the hallways. It is a public school and doesn’t fit all kids all the time but it does a darn good job of meeting the needs of the majority of kids with diverse needs and backgrounds.
Brooklyn High School of the Arts has a lot of potential, with students who are passionate and eager to learn. However, there seems to be favoritism between the majors, with funding disparities that affect student experiences. For example, the visual arts major often lacks essential supplies provided by the school, and it’s usually the teachers who step in to buy materials. Meanwhile, other majors seem to receive more of the school’s funding. With more balanced support and a focus on building a respectful environment, this school could truly thrive and better serve its talented student body.
BHSA was in my top five High School choices. I remember it went like this for me: #1. LaGuardia (Auditioned, Wait-Listed, Deferred, Rejected) #2. Edward R. Murrow (Second top choice, Auditioned, Accepted, Enrolled) #3. Brooklyn High School Of The Arts (Top third choice, Auditioned, Accepted, chose Murrow) #4. Hunter College High School (Accepted) #5. Midwood High School (Accepted)
all the teachers are very lovely, and the musical theater students are the highlight of the school. They are talented and are the best of their community, and always put on a great show.
I went to this school when it was called SARAH J HALE HS. I miss the memories and friends I've made and still keep in touch with. Loved my teachers. Just wish they've done this back in my day. Graduate of 93. School looks the same.
