What Parents Say
Parents praise the Lakeshore Family YMCA Child Care for its clean, safe environment, caring staff, and strong sense of community. The facility is noted for combining educational value with fun activities, and the director is highlighted for going above and beyond to support members. Overall, reviewers describe it as a welcoming place with excellent staff and a warm atmosphere.
My mother and I rent out the gym and run our boxing classes here. From the beginning, the folks at this YMCA have been nothing but kind, welcoming, and beyond helpful. Especially the new director Doug. I have since become a member of this Y, the locker room and showers are always clean with the shampoo and soap stocked. The workout rooms just got new equipment in, and the workout studios are always well kept. Its a great place. Happy to be a part of it.
For me, it is all about the atmosphere. What this Y might lack with regard to a pool, it makes up for with a sense of community. The Director has his hand on the pulse of the community, and constantly finds new and innovative ways in which to support us. I have seen him go over and beyond to support numerous members. The part that really made me decide that I was committed to this particular Y was the effort and level of care that was exhibited on Veterans Day. Not only were we, the veterans, recognized, but one member, in particular, was assisted by the staff in ways that one could not expect from any other gym. As long as I live in Michigan I will be a member of this YMCA.
The employees that run latch key at the public school are uneducated teenagers, who swear in front of the children ("you jerks piss me off"), and are constantly playing on their cell phones. Kids are pulling weapons on other kids, and physically fighting with each other, but the staff does absolutely nothing. They've had seven different people in three months, because they can't get anyone to stay: the turnover there only provides confusion and instability for the children. Lauren is the director, and is completely naive. Darby is a bully, but the director refused to address that. I was paying almost $400/month, for my children to be in a program that is unsafe. I'm glad we're out, but I hope they do something to fix it. I even spoke with one of the former employees who told me that Lauren is useless and has no idea how to run anything. I agree. She does much better working directly with the children. The "C" in YMCA used to stand for "Christian, " now it stands for contemptible. The entire program is pathetic.
Also run as a daycare, which is fine if the building was properly cleaned and the gym wasn't always occupied. They gym is usually occupied by the children or its rented out to subsidize their revenue. So, a percentage of the time members are not allowed use of the gym to nonmembers. The other problem with this place is its filthy. Needs regular cleaning, which does not exist. I would give it 2 stars if it wasn't so close to my house. One 5 star review here is from the previous manager, so not a real unbiased opinion.
Our children love going. They have great outings for the kids. As well as things there. Organization was a challenge at the beginning of the summer but had it worked out after a 2-3 weeks. Great place for children to be active during the summer!
