We made the decision to withdraw our child from Lake Tahoe Preschool after the school refused to allow free radon testing and free mitigation and support that were offered to them. As a physician myself — and as a parent — I could not ignore the health implications. Both myself and a local pediatrician reached out to the school owner, Stefanie Toutolmin, to explain the importance of radon testing and to request a simple, no-cost assessment of the indoor environment. We explained that children are at even higher risk from radon exposure because they breathe faster, their lungs are smaller, and their tissues are more radiosensitive. At the same radon level, a child can absorb up to three times the radiation dose an adult does. Despite multiple conversations and many follow-up emails outlining these facts, the owner declined testing and stated she would not be testing. She dismissed the medical warnings with comments such as “radon is everywhere,” even though radon levels in South Lake Tahoe are known to be high. South Lake Tahoe is a known high-radon region, (projected over 60 percent of homes have levels above the EPA’s act now level of 4.0 pCi/L) and radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. It is colorless, odorless, and impossible to detect without proper testing. Because radon exposure is 100% preventable with basic testing and affordable mitigation, By refusing radon testing despite multiple medical warnings, the owner made a decision that put children at unnecessary and preventable risk. She never reconsidered that choice, even after receiving clear information about the danger. For that reason, I withdrew my child. I hope the school chooses to take this issue seriously moving forward. Every child deserves a safe learning environment, and radon testing is one of the most essential steps any school in this region should take. Als for anyone wanting Montessori. We previously came from a certified Montessori school, and I want to note that Lake Tahoe Preschool does not follow true Montessori practices as we experienced them. They describe themselves as Montessori-based, but in my observation the program does not align with authentic, certified Montessori methodology.
