What Parents Say
Reviews are mixed. Most reviews praise Kol Ami as a warm, welcoming Jewish congregation with strong religious education programs and caring clergy. However, some recent reviews criticize high fees for services and poor event coordination.
It’s truly a small world. Yesterday we attended a Bar Mitzvah for a friend’s grandson. Conor did fantastic. Rabbi Jason Fenton and Cantor Mendelson were phenomenal. They were so welcoming, warm and inspirational. What a great congregation and community. First saw Rabbi Fenster at my Nephew daughter’s Bar Mitzvah in Chicago end of last year. Congregation Kol Ami is blessed to have Rabbi Jason Fenster and Cantor Mendelson being part of the White Plains Community. It was a great Afternoon and evening.
My husband passed away last June. We are past members of Kol Ami. In recent years we attended Yizkor services there as they were open to the public. That was not the case this year. I was told that we would need to pay $400 for me and my daughter to attend the one hour Yizkor Service. It was explained that this was due to security concerns. While I can understand the need to know who is coming in advance in these troubled times I fail to see how $400 is necessary. We had my husband’s memorial service in the Chapel in the Woods last June and paid a substantial but fair fee. But this fee for a Yizkor Service was outrageous. It is my understanding that Jewish law requires no one be turned away to worship at a Yizkor service. We went instead to Woodlands Synagogue with friends. No charge and welcoming atmosphere.
Congregation Kol Ami is a warm and welcoming community in White Plains, Westchester County, New York. My family and I discovered it 10 years ago while "temple shopping" and our search ended as soon as we got there. The clergy and fellow congregants have been there for us in both good and bad times. I would not have been able to cope with my father's passing without the care, comfort and advice of Rabbi Shira. We have one of the top ECP and Religious School programs in the county, as well as programs for people of all ages. We just completed a renovation of our sanctuary and it has far exceeded our wildest expectations! Come and see for yourselves.
I love Kol Ami. Today is Sukkot..a holiday in which we celebrate the harvest of growing things..vegetables, fruits , plants and flowers and we appreciate things temporary..and we eat in temporary dwellings. At Kol Ami we held the sweetest meaningful Sukkot service giving gratitude for our Natural world and each other. Thanks to Rabbi Shira and Cantor David for your leadership, knowledge and joyful singing and chanting. Welcome everyone to our hospitable congregation!!
We have found a warm, welcoming, egalitarian, and family oriented shul here. They truly do offer what they say on their website: Whatever your Jewish, you’ll find it here.”
