What Parents Say
Kempsville Recreation Center is a highly-rated community facility in Virginia Beach offering memberships, fitness amenities, and programs for families. Parents praise the affordable membership cost ($120 annually), clean facility, helpful staff, and diverse offerings including pools, gyms, classes, and activities for all ages.
Love this recreation center. One of the reasons to feel good about being a VA Beach resident is that you get an annual membership for $120 and you get access to all the amenities (pool, gym, track, locker room, etc) and classes (tai chi, Zumba, yoga, etc ). Not only at this location but also other recreation centers as well! Parking is ample. You get full view of the pool to the left of the entrance and then the welcome/reception desk and even a peek at the indoor court. The membership signup was a breeze, the staff was helpful. Flyers of class schedule, pool and gym schedule and other locations are all available by the bulletin stand where you take schedule printouts. I cannot wait to start my early morning classes!
Kinda small, but we enjoy coming here when my nieces and nephew come for a visit. Cheap fun for the family. Could use a little updating, but it adds to the charm. It's really close to our house, so we love that.
I have not been impressed with this recreation center. I’ve been bringing my two-year-old to the pool, and each visit has been stressful due to the attitude of some of the staff. As a 42-year-old and currently pregnant, I do not appreciate being spoken to in a harsh or unfriendly manner when I am carefully supervising my daughter and ensuring she follows the rules. The lifeguards often come across as more militant than approachable, which makes the pool experience unpleasant. A more welcoming and respectful environment would go a long way toward making families feel comfortable here. In addition, the gym is very small, and much of the equipment is either limited or not working properly. For a newer facility, this is disappointing. Considering this is the busiest recreation center in Virginia Beach, it really should have been built larger to accommodate the demand. I truly hope the staff can adopt a friendlier, more considerate approach in the future. If not, we will likely explore other options for a more positive and family-friendly experience.
The Kempsville Rec Center was recently closed for maintenance so the shower heads are new. Great pool and resistance pool to walk as well as the walking track on the second floor. The track is unique because it’s painted different colors for different speeds. Work out room on the first floor. I’m a Marine Corps Veteran so I made sure to take a photo of the sign they posted for free admission to Military members on Fridays…great way to test drive the Rec Center before you decide to become a member.
I had my graduation dinner at the center, and we were able to decorate, have food, and enjoy. The staff was very gracious, making sure you had everything you needed. Thank you, Kempsville Rec, such a beautiful facility.
